A Captivating Introduction: Stranger Things Season 1

Here are my thoughts on the first season of Netflix's Stranger Things.

When I first heard (and mostly read) about the Netflix series Stranger Things, my interest was primarily sparked by Winona Ryder's starring role. As a massive fan of hers from films like Girl, Interrupted, Reality Bites, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands, to name a few, I knew I had to check it out.

However, when I initially watched the first four episodes last year, I was genuinely amazed by what unfolded. True to my binge-watching habits, I paused after a few episodes, not resuming the rest for a while.

But that was then. With just a couple of minutes until the second season of the series was set to drop, I finally watched the complete first season after purchasing the retro VHS case Blu-ray/DVD.

I was once again completely hooked, finding myself deeply invested in these characters. The writing was superb, and the constant references to 80s pop culture just made me want to revisit that entire decade, from the music to even eating Eggo waffles. The series is packed with numerous homages to classic movies, from E.T. to Alien and even The Goonies.

Ryder was excellent and had such great moments, but the real show stealers were undoubtedly the kids. Millie Bobby Brown, who played Eleven, was particularly phenomenal. Even Finn Wolfhard as Mike, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin, and Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas delivered excellent performances. And David Harbour's portrayal of Jim Hopper was equally fantastic. I'm eager for Season 2 to begin, which, by the time this is posted, will already be available.

Overall, I give the first season of Stranger Things a 9.5/10.

You can catch Stranger Things on Netflix.
