Racing The Clock: Prime Video's Countdown Series Premiere Review

Prime Video's Countdown could be what you're looking for if you're in the mood for an exciting new crime drama with a familiar touch. Here's my thoughts on the series premiere.

Countdown, created by One Chicago EP Derek Haas, captures the thrilling intensity of inter-agency police work set in Los Angeles, adding a layer of intrigue with a conspiracy hidden beneath the gunfights and team dynamics. Here are my thoughts on the series premiere.

The show kicks off when a Department of Homeland Security officer is killed, prompting LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles) to join a specialized task force. What begins as a straightforward investigation soon escalates into a sprawling conspiracy that threatens millions. If the setup sounds familiar, that's because it is, but Countdown still manages to entertain, thanks in part to its cast and pace.

Ackles is a trustworthy anchor as Meachum, bringing a perfect mix of grit and sardonic charm. His storyline involving his medical issue adds depth. His lively interactions with Jessica Camacho's Amer Oliveras, the team's driven co-leader, are truly captivating. Initially, their differing styles seem familiar, but by episodes two and three, their reluctant partnership begins to smoothly come together. Fans of Chicago P.D. might even notice similarities to Halsead and Lindsay in their growing relationship.

The rest of the ensemble, including Eric Dan as Nathan Blythe, completes the team nicely, even if it hasn't been particularly memorable yet. There's plenty of opportunity for more character growth, but the foundation set so far is quite promising.

Visually, the show remains sleek and intense, with exciting action sequences and dramatic moments that make it hard to stop watching. While it may not be groundbreaking, it doesn't have to be. Countdown understands its audience perfectly and delivers exactly what it promises: a gritty procedural sprinkled with themes of justice and paranoia. If you're craving a series that combines the grit of Chicago P.D. with the edge of 24, this could be just the perfect choice. All in all, I’m giving the premiere a solid 8 out of 10.
