I've finally caught up with SkyMed Season 3, and trust me, it was quite a ride. From heartbreak to hope, here's my review of what worked, what wowed, and why this season might be the show's strongest yet.
The season opens on a somber note with Jeremy's sudden, tragic death, an event that sends shockwaves through the SkyMed team. For Crystal, this loss ignites a season-long journey of grief, culminating in a cathartic emotional release that allows her to begin healing. It's a testament to the show's strength that it doesn't rush through trauma but gives its characters space to breathe, break, and rebuild.
This season also introduces fresh faces who meaningfully shake things up. Chief Nurse Marianne Ferreria brings both OR expertise and a non-nonsense attitude, creating immediate friction with the crew, particularly Chopper. Their relationship slowly evolves into something both expected and unexpected, depending on your perspective. Meanwhile, pilot TJ enters the scene carrying the emotional weight of his brother's death, but his connection with Crystal adds new layers to both characters.
The medical emergencies this season reach new heights, both literally and emotionally. Standout includes a mid-sair chest tube procedure performed by Hayley during a flight hijacked with a bomb threat. It's intense, dramatic, and grounded in substantial character stakes. Elsewhere, Stef, Lexi, and Chopper face a ticking clock to rescue a girl from a wrecked car, all while being filmed by a documentary crew, adding a meta-entertainment lawyer to an already gripping sequence.
Personal arcs shine just as much as the medical ones. Hayley and Wheezer take their relationship to the next level while both face a health crisis. Bode's wedding provides emotional closure, while Nowak and Tristan's decision to leave SkyMed together for new opportunities marks a bittersweet but satisfying farewell. One particularly touching moment comes when Nowak hands the captain's stripes to Lexi, a quiet gesture packed with meaning that brought tears to my eyes.
Above all, the evolving friendship between Crystal and Hayley anchors this season. Their dynamic remains the emotional heart of SkyMed, characterized by support, honesty, and vulnerability. Watching them navigate personal losses and medical chaos side by side reminds us why character connection is just as vital as adrenaline in good storytelling.
SkyMed returned for a powerful third season that delivered emotional resonance, high-stakes emergencies, and genuine character evolution, cementing its status as a medical drama with both grit and soul. While it may not have the widespread acclaim of ER or The Pitt, this Canadian gem holds its own with the likes of Chicago Med and Grey's Anatomy.
Thanks to its mix of thrilling cases and heartfelt stories, it knows exactly what kind of show it wants to be, and it delivers on it with heart, humor, and humanity. Overall, I give this season a 9/10.
