Alien Earth "Observation" Showcases the True Horror

What an episode this week was for Alien: Earth. The series continues to prove that it’s willing to go to unsettling places, even when the action slows down. Here's my recap and thoughts.

The Mysteries Deepen

After her auto-hearing is modified, Wendy explains that she can hear the alien, which gets Kavalier excited because she can now communicate with the creatures. Later that night, Wendy visits the lab where Joe’s lung is being monitored, and an alien creature emerges, breaking the glass. But while the creature would normally attack, this one didn't attack Wendy and even allowed her to pet it. WTF?!

Meanwhile, Morrow contacts Slightly, asking him to obtain a Xenomorph egg for him. After earning his trust by explaining that the egg belongs to him and revealing his first name, Kumi, Slightly also reveals his own first name, Aarush Singh. But when Slightly doesn't want to betray Krish and his bosses, Morrow pays a visit to his mother to intimidate him into doing what Morrow asks him to do. Unbeknownst to them, Krish was listening to the conversation.

Speaking of Krish, he and Tootles (or, in this case, Isaac, as he prefers to be called) are testing the one-eyed octopus-like specimen on a sheep. It attacks the animal by gouging out the sheep's eyeball and attaching itself to the brain. Later on, their equipment shows a sharp rise in brain activity, indicating a level of intelligence in the creature as it observes them.

A Look at the Hybrids

Joe learns his place in Prodigy, that Wendy is their property. If he were to leave, there would be a massive bill for the new lung, to which he reluctantly agrees to stay. Nibs surprises Dame and Arthur by telling them she's pregnant. Of course, this isn't possible, so Dame has a session with her that ends with Nibs being aggressive. After she leaves, Dame gives security instructions to contain her.

My Thoughts

"Observations" was another excellent episode, as it builds significantly with its characters, particularly the hybrids on Prodigy, as they learn about their identities and purpose. These episodes don't have to have action-packed scenes to be great; the conversations between characters are just enough to have you on the edge of your seat. The tension between Morrow and Slightly, as well as the confrontation between Nibs and Dame, was both intense and thrilling. If you want to call it an action scene, the eye-octopus species attacking the sheep was one of the most exhilarating and horrifying things I've seen in a long time, as it literally had me stunned. The writing is once again brilliant, along with solid performances from Lily Newmark, Adarsh Gourav, Babou Ceesay, Timothy Olyphant, and Sydney Chandler. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
