An original cast member is leaving Chicago Med.
Marlyne Barrett, who has played ER nurse Maggie Lockwood since the show premiered in the Fall of 2015, will be leaving the NBC drama ahead of Season 11, according to reports from TVLine and Deadline. Her departure isn't permanent, and the door is open for her to return. She is "stepping back for personal reasons", sources tell Deadline.
Last season, Maggie engaged in negotiations with the nursing union, which ultimately resulted in a sick-out. During season five, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Subsequently, Barrett announced that she had been diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer in July 2022. In September 2024, she disclosed that she was in complete remission.
Barrett's departure coincides with the announcement that fellow original cast member Nick Gehlfuss, who portrayed Dr. Will Halstead, will make a guest appearance in Season 11. Gehlfuss will join the two remaining founding stars of Chicago Med, S. Epatha Merkerson and Oliver Platt, who are confirmed to return in the autumn.
I just hope everything is well with Barrett and her family. As April was the original nurse, Maggie truly felt like the heart and soul of the ED during the season one premiere. While she wasn't in the backdoor pilot, she made a strong impression from the series premiere in 2015 and has since owned the department.
