DMV (S1, Ep. 13) "Test Drive"

Does the world really need another Vic? That is the existential question at the heart of this week's episode. From teaching apathetic teens the "rules of the road" to a Hollywood-style marketing makeover, the East Hollywood branch was anything but boring. Here's my recap and review.

When Barb launches a Teen Outreach program at the DMV, it triggers Gregg's repressed memories of his former life as a teacher. While Gregg initially wants to keep his "Teacher Side" buried, Colette pushes him to intervene on behalf of a student who embodies teenage apathy. This kid is so unbothered that he fails his driving test before even moving the car an inch.

The breakthrough occurs when the student misses his bus, prompting Gregg and Colette to give him a ride in his own car. In a quintessential Cool Teacher scene, Gregg takes control of the wheel in an empty parking lot, showing off some high-speed maneuvers to illustrate the freedom that comes with a license. Although the teen stays composed, he comes back the next day to retake his test, demonstrating that he hasn’t lost his confidence touch.

Hollywood Barb tries to film a promotional ad with Ceci, but the project quickly becomes chaotic as egos clash. Despite the chaos, the finished trailer is surprisingly polished and a hit.

The weirdest arc of the night goes to Vic. After spotting a teen named Nic who looks, dresses, and talks exactly like him, Vic becomes convinced he’s looking at his own biological son. Vic takes Nic for his driving test (and passes him without making him drive, naturally) while digging for information. He learns that Nic has two moms and a bizarre obsession with Entourage Season 3.

After a frantic search through his"old "medical donations, Vic realizes his profile was so strange that no one ever actually bought his sperm. Seeing his disappointment, Noa (Alex Tarrant) secretly buys a sample to ensure that somewhere, somewhere", a "Min"-Vic" might actually exist.

"Test "rive" really shines by highlighting staff's heartfelt backstories, even as the plot takes some quirky turns. It’s a wonderful episode that reaffirms why we connect so much with these characters: underneath all the bureaucracy, they genuinely care about the community and their own uniquely quirky legacies.

Seeing Gregg’s past life blended into his DMV duties was a delightful moment. Meadows shines as the exhausted yet capable mentor, and his parking-lot joyride was the episode's comedic highlight. The quirky idea that a teen’s favorite action movie is exactly Entourage Season 3 adds a charming, absurd touch to this cult-hit show. Gregg is the wild card, but the obsession with Nic felt uncomfortable at times as they showed a balance between sweet and stalker-ish, landing on a nice moment with Noa, despite some cringeworthy moments along the way.

Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.

What did you think of this week's episode of DMV?  With Noa officially sponsoring the "Vic 2.0" project, do you think we’ll see a flash-forward to a tiny toddler in a Hawaiian shirt, or is this a secret Noa should take to her grave? Leave a comment.

You can catch DMV Mondays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
