Daredevil: Born Again (S2, Ep. 7) "The Hateful Darkness"

After weeks of bloody alleys and conspiracies, Daredevil: Born Again returned to the courtroom, where Matt Murdock is most dangerous. 'The Hateful Darkness' was a tense episode, blending legal thriller and psychological horror. With stakes reaching life-or-death, it showed that the best weapon against Kingpin isn't a fist, but the truth. Here's my recap and review.

The episode centers on the high-stakes "Trial of Karen Page." Following her arrest during the City Hall riots, Karen is fast-tracked into Wilson Fisk’s newly established "Vigilante Court" on charges of aiding terrorism. Just as the prosecution prepares to bury her, Kirsten McDuffie drops a bombshell, introducing her co-counsel: a very public, very much alive Matthew Murdock. Matt uses the televised platform to wage war, aggressively dismantling AVTF officer Connor Powell on the stand and exposing Fisk’s puppet-mastery over the city's new task force. Despite the legal win, the psychological toll is immense; Karen endures a chilling cell-side visit from Fisk and a brutal "evaluation" from a compromised Dr. Heather Glenn that turns physically violent.

Outside the courtroom, Matt plays his most desperate card yet. He releases Dex from hiding, offering the broken assassin a singular chance to "balance the scales" for the murder of Foggy Nelson. Following a tip from Jessica Jones, Dex intervenes just in time to stop a Fisk-led assassination attempt on Governor McCaffrey. By saving her, Dex gives the Governor the political ammunition she needs to finally strike back at Fisk’s "Freeport" charter. However, the victory is stained by the tragic death of Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini). The intern-turned-deputy finally chooses a side, helping informant BB Urich escape with a phone full of evidence against Fisk. When Daniel refuses to reveal her location, Buck Cashman executes him in a heartbreaking closing scene. The episode ends with a somber Matt Murdock, wounded in a parking-lot shootout, praying to Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost causes, only for Jessica Jones to reappear at his side for the final stand.

"The Hateful Darkness" truly stands out as one of the season's standout moments. This episode beautifully captures everything a penultimate chapter should be: it elevates the tension, trims down the numbers, and sets the perfect stage for an epic finale showdown. As Matt sits peacefully in that church alongside Jessica Jones, the message is beautifully conveyed: sometimes the "lost cause" is truly the only one worth fighting for. It masterfully brings together all the pieces of the "Freeport" conspiracy while also delivering a heartfelt payoff that fans have eagerly awaited: Matt Murdock back in his suit, fighting passionately for his friends in daylight.

Charlie Cox’s performance in the trial scenes was electrifying. Watching Matt skillfully use the law to uncover Fisk’s lies gave us a proud, fist-pumping moment after the season's intense stories. Michael Gandolfini’s storyline was a subtle but standout highlight, with his death hitting us hard. It reminds us of the human toll of Fisk’s brutal regime — not just for vigilantes but for everyday people trying to do right. Wilson Bethel adds depth to Poindexter, making him one of the most interesting characters in the MCU. His move to save the Governor was beautifully choreographed, adding a complex layer of "redemption" — messy, real, and compelling.

Overall, I give this episode a 9.5/10.

What did you think of this episode? With Daniel’s evidence in BB Urich’s hands and Matt leading the charge against the AVTF, do you think the truth will topple Fisk’s empire in the finale, or is the 'Hateful Darkness' too deep in New York City to wash away? Leave a comment.
