Lucky (S1, Ep. 5) Are We Bad People?"

Lucky trades explosive action for emotional depth, delivering a character-driven episode that sets the stage for an intriguing finale.

After last week's explosive car chase, Lucky slows things down just enough to let its characters breathe before setting the stage for the final stretch. Episode 5, "Are We Bad People?", is less about action and more about grief, family, and the complicated choices that have defined Lucky's life.

Anya Taylor-Joy delivers another terrific performance as Lucky struggles with Cary's death while questioning the life she's always known. One of the episode's strongest moments comes when she unexpectedly drops her con artist persona during a quiet conversation with a stranger, revealing a vulnerability we've rarely seen. A childhood flashback with her father, John (Timothy Olyphant), adds welcome context to Lucky's upbringing and the moral code that has shaped her.

The search for Cary's missing fortune takes an entertaining turn thanks to a clever reveal involving his childhood teddy bear, finally unlocking the cryptocurrency fortune that has driven much of the season's conflict. Meanwhile, Annette Bening continues to command every scene as the intimidating Priscilla, whose ultimatum reminds everyone she's still the biggest threat in the room.

The episode builds toward a satisfying final twist as Lucky realizes Agent Billie Rand has orchestrated John’s early release as bait. Rather than run, Lucky flips the situation to her advantage, ending the hour with a confident surrender that puts the next move firmly in her hands.

While it lacks the nonstop thrills of the previous episode, "Are We Bad People?" succeeds through strong character development and smart storytelling. It deepens Lucky's relationships, raises the emotional stakes, and positions the series for what should be an exciting finale. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
