When the internet becomes a weapon, the next attack could bring an entire country to its knees.
Peacock's The Undeclared War is a gripping political cyber-thriller that imagines what happens when a coordinated cyberattack threatens Britain's infrastructure, political stability, and upcoming general election. Told through the eyes of Saara Parvin (Hannah Khalique-Brown), a brilliant computer science student beginning an internship at GCHQ, the six-episode series combines political intrigue, espionage, and technological warfare into an increasingly tense story.
Khalique-Brown is excellent as Saara, bringing intelligence and vulnerability to a young analyst suddenly thrown into a crisis far beyond her experience. Her ability to spot something hidden inside the initial malware attack puts her at the center of a much larger conspiracy, while Simon Pegg delivers a strong performance as GCHQ's Danny Patrick. The series also does a good job showing that cyberwarfare isn't simply about computers—it can influence elections, manipulate public opinion, spread deepfakes, and create enough confusion to push governments toward dangerous decisions.
The biggest strength of The Undeclared War is how quickly the stakes escalate, moving from a seemingly contained cyberattack to a crisis that threatens Britain's relationship with its allies and potentially risks a physical confrontation with Russia. The Russian hacker storyline adds another interesting dimension, particularly as Vadim realizes the consequences of the operation he's helping build. My one hesitation is the amount of technical cyber terminology. While it adds authenticity, some of the jargon can be difficult to follow and may pull viewers out of the story. Still, fans of The Capture or The Diplomat should find plenty to enjoy here.
The Undeclared War is a smart, tense political thriller that feels increasingly relevant in an age of cyberattacks, misinformation, and digital warfare. It isn't always the easiest watch, but when the pieces come together, the result is genuinely compelling. Overall, I give season one an 8/10.
