CIA Season 2, Episode 2 Review: “Dead Drop” Delivers a Tense Spy Thriller

A dying Russian spy wants revenge, while Bill and Colin discover that secrets can be just as dangerous at home as in the field.

“Dead Drop,” the second episode of CIA Season 2, delivers a solid spy thriller built around a ticking clock and betrayal within Russian intelligence. The case follows a conventional path, but the identity of Viktor’s attacker delivers an effective twist. Meanwhile, Bill struggles with the truth about his late father, and Colin discovers that moving on from Toni may be easier said than done.

The mission begins when Russian intelligence officer Viktor Molotov (Gene Farber) approaches Colin (Tom Ellis) and Bill (Nick Gehlfuss) with a desperate offer. Poisoned with ricin by his comrades after refusing to participate in an operation that threatened his family, Viktor has fewer than 12 hours to live. He agrees to share intelligence about a threat to American assets in Russia if the CIA helps identify his attacker.

The investigation takes a dangerous turn when a CIA analyst used as bait is abducted, forcing Colin and Bill into a tense rescue operation. The ensuing bridge confrontation allows Viktor to identify the former colleague who poisoned him, bringing his story to a fitting conclusion. Although the setup is conventional, the ticking clock and Viktor’s determination to protect his family give the mission emotional weight. It’s a familiar spy-thriller setup, but the time pressure and Viktor’s desire to protect his family give the case enough emotional weight.

The more interesting developments come from the agents’ personal lives. Bill is still processing the revelation that his late father secretly worked for the CIA. His frustration is understandable, but Colin offers a useful perspective: Bill also keeps his work and its secrets from his mother and wife, Katie. It doesn’t resolve Bill’s questions, but it highlights the complicated legacy of a career built on withholding the truth from loved ones.

Colin has his own complications. He learns that Toni (Angela Sarafyan) wants to return and is looking for a job, prompting him to seek help from Nikki (Necar Zadegan). Colin insists he’s moved on, but his interest in Toni’s plans suggests unfinished business between them. Gina’s growing interest in fieldwork also offers a welcome glimpse of where her character might be headed.

Meanwhile, Gina's interest in fieldwork mirrors Bill and Colin's, offering a welcome glimpse of where her character might be headed.

“Dead Drop” isn’t groundbreaking, but it balances its central mission with enough character development to keep the story moving. Viktor’s fate provides a satisfying resolution, while Bill’s family revelations and Colin’s history with Toni leave intriguing questions for the episodes ahead.

CIA continues to deliver an entertaining mix of espionage, action, and personal drama. I’m particularly interested in seeing how Bill handles the truth about his father—and whether Colin is really ready to leave Toni behind.
