TV Corner Notes: Resurrections, Cold Cases, and Emmy Forecasts

TV Corner Notes logo

Hey there, I'm Adam, and welcome to TV Corner Notes, my weekly column dedicated to all the significant (and not-so-significant) happenings in the world of television. From standout episodes and breaking news to shows I'm watching but not fully recapping, this is where it all comes together, so let's dive in.

America's Favorite Serial Killer Returns

In case you missed it, Dexter is back (again!) in Dexter: Resurrection, which premiered this past week on Paramount+ with Showtime. After the events of Dexter New Blood, it turns out you really can't keep a killer down, not even if his son shoots him.

The first two episodes dropped, and I'm surprised at how quickly I felt reconnected to this world. Dexter's recovering from a 10-week coma, Harrison's dealing with his own killing in NYC, and there's a new serial killer on the loose, calling himself the Dark Passenger, a clear nod to Dexter's own nickname.

It's a compelling setup, and I'm especially intrigued by how the show is handling the father-son dynamic in this next chapter. Also, Uma Thurman shows up briefly, and now I can't stop imagining how electric she might've been if she'd been part of the series all along.

Definitely one I'll be following week to week.

Maggie Q is Killing It in Ballard

Last Wednesday, Prime Video dropped the first season of Ballard, the new spinoff from the Bosch universe, and it's led by none other than Maggie Q. What can I say? She's magnetic. An actual must-watch presence.

Maggie Q. plays Detective Renee Ballard, who heads up a cold case unit made up of volunteers. The main case this season? The murder of a politician's sister was a crime tied to several other unsolved cases. The format alternates between episodic cases and the season-long arc. This sometimes disrupts the pacing, but overall, it is effective.

The ensemble is stacked, featuring Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, and Michael Mosley. However, it's the trio of Maggie Q, Courtney Taylor, and John Carroll Lynch that brings the show together. Their chemistry gives it the kind of emotional weight and complexity that makes procedural drama addictive. And if you're a fan of the Bosch series, you'll likely enjoy this show as well.

Call it your new weekend binge-you won't regret it.

Lioness Season 2 Ups the Game

I finally caught up with Season 2 of Lioness (formerly Special Ops: Lioness) on Paramount+, and it's a significant step up from Season One.

While the first season had its moments, I found the family drama distracting and uneven. Season two, however, leans hard into richer storytelling and puts its characters front and center on the mission. The turning point? When Joe and her team discover a warehouse full of captive young women, their mission and moral center are split in two.

Zoe Saldana is phenomenal here, and fresh off an Oscar win, she could absolutely add an Emmy nomination. Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman have more presence this time around, and Michael Kelly steals the season. Shout-out to new cast member Genesis Rodriguez, whose character adds real tension and complexity, even more so than Cruz did last season.

Poker Face Season Finale: Afterthoughts on Charlie's Fate

Boy, that Poker Face Season 2 finale really resonated with me this week, particularly Charlie's fate. If you haven't seen the finale, you can read my full review of the episode. This ending left me feeling profoundly sad for Charlie. I'm now desperately hoping that Peacock greenlights the show for more than just a single-season pickup (Come on, Peacock! We need Charlie Cale in our lives!).

It's That Time of Year Again...Emmy Time!

Like Back to School and Christmas for TV fans, this week brings us the announcement of nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmys, set to drop on Tuesday morning.

So, who's getting the nomination this year? Here are some of my predictions:

Drama: The Pitt, Andor, and The White Lotus are the three strongest shows.

Comedy: Hacks, The Studio, Abbott Elementary, and The Bear

While Abbott Elementary may get nominations, don't sleep on St. Denis Medical and A Man on the Inside, as they both deserve some Emmy love as well.

What shows do you think will get nominated? Drop your predictions or dream nominations in the comments.

That's it for the first edition of TV Corner Notes! What have you been watching this week? Have you seen any of the shows I mentioned? Let's talk TV in the comments, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,

Adam
