It's the holiday season, and will Collette get the chance to score Noa after his breakup with Mary? Here's a recap and review of the fall finale of DMV, "The Next Window."
After hearing that Noa broke things off with Mary, Colette is ecstatic, but not for long. Noticing a line of single women forming at Noa's window, Colette acts fast. She proposes a road trip to Sacramento to personally drop off the department's holiday card to Barb's boss. Things take a twisted turn when Barb, Gregg, and Vic all insist on coming along.
During a pit stop to change clothes, Colette finally gets Noa to dance with her, but the moment is ruined when the music plays "Merry," which sounds like "Mary." This leads Colette to reluctantly give Noa relationship advice on how he should tell Mary his true feelings, which he immediately follows by texting her.
Along the way, Barb tracks down her boss, who happens to be the DMV's ceremonial Santa, and finds him totally wasted. When she tries to give him her holiday card, she makes a mess of the interaction. Luckily, she meets Sally, an executive who runs things behind the scenes, and Sally graciously takes the card, promising to make sure Santa sees it once he sobers up. The bonding between Barb and Sally is a clear highlight of the episode.
Gregg hopes to use the trip to find Kevin, the AI he bonded with over his chair issues in the previous episode. It turns out Vic has been "imprisoning" Kevin through obsessive texting. Vic gets busted when Sally casually spills the beans about Kevin's AI identity. Vic apologizes to Gregg with eggnog, and the two quickly become friends again. Gregg, inspired by his back issues, gets an idea to sue the DMV.
Just as they return from their 12-hour road trip, Colette and Noa have a quiet moment. However, it's immediately interrupted when Mary returns and tells Noa she's decided not to go to Mexico. This suggests they are officially back together, leaving a disappointed Colette to sadly celebrate with Gregg and Vic over a knockoff bottle of wine.
"The Next Window" was a hilarious episode from start to finish. Colette worked hard to finally get her guy, but ultimately chose to become a better person by helping Noa with his relationship with Mary. This decision immediately backfired when they rekindled their relationship. This push-and-pull between Noa and Colette feels just right for the show, as it would have been too soon for them to get together permanently. The bonding between Barb and Sally was excellent; those two hit it off perfectly and provided one of the episode's strongest comedic arcs. Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.
