As CIA hurdles toward its Season 1 finale, “Forbidden Eye” delivers a masterclass in spycraft and emotional devastation. With the legendary David Strathairn lending serious gravitas, the show finally unmasks its mole, only to drop a bombshell that changes everything we thought we knew about Colin Glass’s past. Here is my recap and review.
The hour kicks off when Colin discovers that his longtime mentor, Sandy (guest star David Strathairn), has vanished following the murder of a key asset. Colin recruits Bill for an off-the-books search that puts them at odds with Agency leadership. Their hunt leads to an ancient library where Sandy has gone to ground to protect his assets from the “Forbidden Eye.” In a smart bit of linguistic detective work, the team realizes the phrase actually translates to “Eye of the Pyramid,” directly tying the threat to the elusive Pyramid Securities mole. Strathairn is terrific here, embodying the paranoid, isolated reality that awaits spies who survive too long.
The mole hunt then narrows to Kevin, a colleague whose shady behavior finally catches up with him. Colin tracks him to a safe house where Kevin is holding a woman named Sarah hostage. The ensuing fight is visceral; Colin saves Sarah and takes Kevin down, but the real wound is emotional. To protect Sarah from this life, Colin coldly tells her their relationship was merely a “job” and that he never had feelings for her. It’s a crushing act of self-sacrifice that underlines Colin’s choice of mission over any chance at happiness.
The final act detonates the show’s status quo. While Kevin lies in a hospital bed, a “doctor” slips into his room and alters his IV, killing him before he can be interrogated. When Colin reviews the security footage, he doesn’t see a stranger; he sees Toni (Angela Sarafyan), his former partner and the love of his life, whom he believed had been dead for fifteen months. The mole hunt is over, but a much more personal war has just begun.
“Forbidden Eye” is exactly the kind of penultimate episode we love: tense, revealing, and deeply personal. Strathairn’s presence grounds the spycraft in a timeless noir mood, and the moral ambiguity around Colin’s lie to Sarah lands hard. That final Toni twist, upending a 15-month backstory in the last thirty seconds, is a bold, thrilling swing that sets the stage for an unforgettable finale.
Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
