St. Denis Medical Season 3 Premiere Review: Big Laughs Without Ron

A new doctor, romantic complications, and a hospital that doesn’t feel quite right without Ron: St. Denis Medical is back, and the laughs come with heart.

TV’s best medical comedy wastes no time reminding us why it’s such a delight. The Season 3 premiere balances workplace chaos with meaningful character moments as the staff adjusts to Ron’s absence. Alex, in particular, isn’t thrilled about the changes—and her introduction to his temporary replacement provides some of the episode’s funniest scenes.

With Ron recovering from triple bypass surgery, Dr. Highland (Damon Wayans) arrives to take over his duties. He’s upbeat, motivational, and seemingly convinced he’s starring in a prestigious medical drama. Essentially St. Denis’s answer to Noah Wyle, he brings dramatic speeches and an enthusiasm for turning every situation into a big television moment.

Alex isn’t buying it. She finds his approach exhausting and clearly isn’t ready to accept anyone taking Ron’s place. Still, the two unexpectedly bond over making fun of Joyce, although their antics eventually land them in trouble. It’s an entertaining pairing, and Wayans fits comfortably into the show’s comedic world without simply imitating the character he’s temporarily replacing.

Meanwhile, Serena and Matt are working out what their relationship means now that they’ve finally gotten together. They keep things casual and avoid labels, but that arrangement gets complicated when Serena discovers Matt has been attending church with Holly, who clearly has feelings for him. Serena’s reaction suggests she may want more than she’s willing to admit. Their chemistry remains a highlight, and this development gives them something interesting to navigate beyond simply becoming a couple.

Joyce has her own priorities. The hospital’s new birthing center has earned her a nomination for Best Hospital Administrator in Oregon, and she wastes no time campaigning for votes among her employees. It’s another reminder that Joyce’s need for validation is practically a full-time job.

For all the fun Highland brings, though, the premiere’s strongest moments center on Ron. When Bruce visits him in physical therapy and shares updates from the hospital, Ron is visibly unhappy about how much has changed. Bruce’s warning to Alex that Ron isn’t coming back leads to a familiar Alex-and-Ron moment that captures the heart of the series. The hospital may be moving forward, but imagining St. Denis without him is another matter.

I’m so glad St. Denis Medical is back. The premiere delivers the sharp comedy, lovable characters, and genuine warmth that make this series work. Highland is a welcome addition; Matt and Serena’s relationship has room to grow, and Ron’s absence gives the episode emotional weight without overwhelming the humor. It’s a terrific start to the season—and a reminder that this hospital’s greatest strength is the people in it. Overall, I give the season premiere a 9/10.
