ER: 20 Years Later.

It was on this date, September 19th, that television would change for the better of medical genre, It was on this date that the world become so addicted to the series "ER" that it paid the way to other great medical shows we see today. 

I think we might know the whole story of "ER" and how it was created. It was written as a film script by the late author Michael Crichton, who wrote Jurassic Park, about his experience as a medical student in an urban emergency hospital. No one picked it up.

It would take 20 years later, that the idea to make it a film was in the works but then got delayed again when director Steven Spielberg and Crichton took a break and Crichton had told him about this book he was working on, which was "Jurassic Park" and soon became the biggest box office hit in 1993. 

This series got shopped around twice to one network, which did pick it up at the second time around, which was NBC. At that time NBC had it's "Must-See-TV" era going and when they read and saw the pilot they didn't know what to think of it at all, too graphic, intensest, a lot of stories in one hour and the question will the audience get it. 

Apparently so, the pilot was a two hour movie, which premiered on Monday night against Monday Night Football, which the show did really well and then soon put it on the historical Thursday night where both "Hill Street Blues" and "LA Law" held that spot. Thursday night came and it beat out it's rival over at CBS "Chicago Hope," which critics gave high praise about it and predicting that it will be out ER in ratings. 

I guess they were wrong. 

This show got recognized quick and with these unknown actors at the time, which become big stars now. Noah Wyle, Juilianna Margulies, Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfeld, Eriq La Salle and one actor by the name of George Clooney. They got their big break.

The series was a major hit. In fact, it grew to be the #1 new drama but also the #2 series of the season behind "Seinfeld." The shoe literally grew audience higher than "American Idol," "The Big Bang Theory," and "NCIS."   And in fact that network television will never see those kinds of ratings again unless it's a sporting event.

This is the series that changed the format of what medical shows are today. Telling stories about the cases, the characters of both the patients and doctors and most of everything relied on the writing, which made the show a huge it. That and the fact the Clooney was literally the best damn looking child doctor in the history of television.

The show lasted for 15 years and still made Thursday night Must See TV til the end of it's run. The show kept true to the medicine. A lot of real doctors and nurses could not watch it because they would say it resembles of their job too much.

If I had to sum up 10 episodes that define ER it would have to be in this order:

If you watched these episodes, these episodes define what "ER" was and is in it's own way legendary.

It help influenced other medical dramas like "House" and "Royal Pains" not to mention "The Night Shift."

Personally this is my all time favorite series. No other show will top this series in my opinion. I grew up watching it since I was a little kid. At that time, it was my grandma, mom and I that watched it together. It kind of stopped around the time my brothers came into the picture but that's okay we did watch it separate homes. And when the series ended it was still as what it use to be, my grandma, my mom and me watched it while my brothers were with my grandfather. And oh yeah, it was the series finale, there were tears coming and going that night.


Amazing that "ER" premiered 20 years ago. Time does fly by so fast. In a couple of days it will be "Friends" anniversary too.

"ER" gave us so much. It gave us inspiration to be doctors and nurses, it gave us the drama and entertainment that we have never seen before and made us tune in week after week after week. It really did shape the way we watch television along with "Hill Street Blues."

There's no way to sum up the series. It was just simply a legendary series all on it own.

The Mysteries of Laura "Pilot" review

Laura Diamond is not your typical NYPD Detective. She loves to catch criminals and solve mysteries but also has to deal with a stressful family with a soon-to-be ex-husband and devilish twin boys who would want to make you glad you’re working. This is the concept of the new NBC series “The Mysteries of Laura.”

Based on the same show in Spain, the series centers around Laura Diamond, played by Debra Messing, who is not your typical detective or mother, but she’ll do whatever it takes to get the job done no matter what or how she does it. She’s a bit like Columbo meets Jessica Fletcher, but without writing a novel, add the attitude and an oversized eating habit.

The series is a dramedy, meaning there’s an equal amount of comedy and drama. And for an actress like Messing, she can balance both of those genres.

The pilot aired on NBC. Wednesday night after America’s Got Talent finale and re-aired again on Thursday. The storyline of the pilot is of Laurthatis called to investigate a threat to a high businessman who then turns out to be murdered and the stress of finding her twin sons in preschool after being kicked out.

There were scenes in the hilarious pilot. One was when Laura was heading to investigate the threat, and on her way there, she was singing “The Warrior” by Patty Smyth in the car. 

Another was where she was and was going to rent out a swimsuit, but it cost way too much—and made a come meant that she could get the same dress at Target for less than it cost. As was done, she took it off while wearing a button shirt from the suspect and told the lady that she kept the tag on the suit so she didn't have to pay the total price.

A scene showed her soft side after the interview about getting her boys into another school, and the boys didn't behave too well. So, the interview was done, but her husband stuck his neck out for the first time. WWE Seesaw told her she was the best mother, which didn't make a difference.

Later, we see Laura putting the kids to bed and hear them tell her they think she’s a great mom and love her. Then the music “All of Me” by John Legend played, making the scene happy but sad.

“The Mysteries of Laura” is a well-balanced mystery crime dramedy with a good, from Josh Lucas to Janina Gavankar to even the twin boys. It has some of that classic The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes to Murder She Wrote if you like to watch mystery crime shows.

Messing’s character, Laura, is similar to her well-known character from Will & Grace of Grace Adler. She can’t sing (but who can? We love to sing in the car), and the foot fetish is another. But it doesn't seem to be a big problem for this series. 

You can catch new episodes of “The Mysteries of Laura” on Wednesdays, starting September 23^rd, at 10/9 central, on NBC. The show is in the lineup of other cop dramas before “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago P.D.” which the network is calling that night “Women Crush Wednesday for its strong female characters on each show.

A Look at The Mod Squad: A Dark, '90s Teen Cop Drama

What do you get when you have three teenage delinquents who have been chosen to do undercover police work instead of serving jail time? You get "The Mod Squad." This 1999 film, based on the hit television series from the late 1960s to early 1970s, brings these teens into the crime world of the 1990s.

I Love the Harbinger

2012-2014, I wrote, contributed, and worked for a fantastic community college newspaper called ICC Harbinger. I got to work with the most amazing people I had ever known and worked with whom I'm proud to call my second family. Well, in April 2013, the paper won over a dozen awards, and one co-worker said there should be a theme or a victory song about the newspaper.

After that, for months, I try to figure something out. No one who knows me knew about or has ever read this. I wrote a bit of a parody about working for the paper with some help from one of the greatest male country singers of all time, Toby Keith. The song is called "I Love the Harbinger."

We have editors, we have writers

And we got advisers, really great advisers
And we got the best photographers
And some of them would dress up like arty stars

The Store that Brings Quality Sounds

A little store in Downtown Peoria shows what makes electronics a bit more different than what we see at any other electronic stores in the Central Illinois area. Electronics Diversified has been part of Peoria since 1948 and both co-owners Don Gort and Don Baker know that what they have to show you is something that could just blow you mind away. If you are an electronics and sounds person then this is the place for you. Electronics Diversified has been unique among other electronic stores because they have not only the state of the art electronics but also vintage equipment to some that date back to the 1930's.

One thing that makes Electronics Diversified or better known as EDI, standout has been their unusual shift in types of equipment sold. It all started in 1948, as a spin-off to an x-ray business.

"They sold equipment to hospitals around the Central Illinois area," said Don Baker. "Soon after their business was installed, some of the doctors later would ask about mono equipment to be installed into the waiting rooms and if they knew of anyone who had done this kind of service."

Only a few businesses have made such an unusual shift.

Another difference has been their quality of sounds. They have sold mid-fi to higher end monos and store equipment for years. From solid state to high-bird and all tube integrated amplifiers, amplifiers and preamplifiers and also CD players with tube output that co smooth out the loudness. With that they have in store, from old to new electronics it could blow you away even some of those at Best Buy.

Other things that also make the store tick are their resurgence of vinyl and turntables that has surprised many young folks these days.

"Young people would come in to the store and we will be playing a turntable and they just couldn't believe the smoothness and dynamics they are hearing," said Gort stating on how young people's reaction to listening to vinyl records on turntables."

Both Gort and Baker advised to those who want to have a turntable is that they have to take care of their albums in a way that you don't have any pops or clicks that's caused by dirt. The prices for these turntables go up from $125.00 to $5,000 and higher end turntables do not come any with cartridges.

They stated that if you want to buy one, that would ranged from $29.95 to $1,895.00 in store, $5,000 if you wish to order one at the store.

A couple by the name of Mike and Jenny Waltz, who comes to EDI frequently just to see and hear what they have in store.

"Probably the best thing is that they sell vintage equipment that no one else sells," says Mike Waltz, who just loves vintages pieces.

Clearly these vintage equipment make EDI unique among other electronic stores.

Now, you've probably are thinking that, "so what? It's just like Best Buy or Wal-Mart." But not so fast, because that's not what it's all that's crack up to be at all. There's a huge difference between those stores and that of EDI.

EDI is a unique product of buiness, with services and commitment to that of the customer satisfaction.

"They help those of the common guy and they know a lot about it," said Jenny Waltz.

Another costumer gave his point of view very clear about EDI.

"They one thing that EDI is different than any other place is that they don't sell crap and they take the time to help the costumers with questions they have," stated by Scott Turner of Indianapolis, IN who comes to the store a couple of times just to see what they have in store.

For what EDI has in store is something that nothing can over beat to any other store in Central Illinois.

Just before the start of 2010, both Gort and Baker decided that it was time for a change and a changed they have made. After being located on Brandywine Drive in North Peoria, just across from Northwoods Mall for over 30 years and on January 2010, they've moved to Downtown on the first floor of the Murray Building on the corner of Walnut and Water Street or for a better reference off of Washington Street across from the Peoria Police Station.

With the new place it almost feels like you are in a studio waiting to hear a band play. It's become a place where friends who are mostly guys that love to hear great sound quality that comes from one of your own music and to also hear some stories as well.

Since opening in 1948, EDI has been installing, repairing and given excellence in customer service advice for over 60 years and still gives us that sound that we could all love to enjoy. And both "The Dons," as they are called, are enjoying what they do and what they give to their fellow customers.

If you are looking to hear great sound out of your own music, then Electronics Diversified is the place for all that to happen.

20 years since My So-Called Life & Still-Growing Strong.

It was on this date, 20 years ago, that one of the greatest one season television series premiered and changed the face of television forever. "My So-Called Life" portrays of an adolescent and commentary if its perceptive central character Angela Chase, portrayed by Claire Danes. This being Danes' first leading role in television earning her a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nod. MSCL was the first television series to be called reality TV.

The show centers on strong themes of important social issues from child abuse, teenage alcoholism, homelessness, homophobic, school violence and drug use just to name a few. It really was like a PSA message in each episode.

With it's strong cast of actors and writers, this show stand the test of time as a show that still grows with new fans. Of the time when the show was going to be canceled, it drew in fans to started an online campaign to save the show. MSCL isn't just a show for teenagers, it's for teens, children and grown ups. This series doesn't talk down to the audience members from it's characters.

Claire Danes as Angela Chase

For a show that only lasted one season, it's still has a huge fan base to this day. It paid the way that network television now focuses on the young demographics of 18-49 yrs, 13-24 yrs. And of course, what kind I say about Claire Danes? She made what MSCL is all about. I don't think that if she wasn't Angela Chase that the show wouldn't have been anyway popular.

Even though the show was scheduled on Thursday night against the powerhouse of Must See-TV of Mad About You and a new little series called Friends. Looking back at it's season rating, if this show was on today's airing that this show would be picked up.

I have watched all 19 episodes of the series on DVD. I feel that none of the episodes are out of dated. The writing is still strong than ever. I still wish we had some closure to the cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. Will Angela decide to go with Brian and leave Jordan? Will Graham Chase have a successful restaurant business? Who knows?

Probably we can only give it an ending that we truly think it deserves. But know this, as of now and in the future, MSCL will still be watched, talked about and still grabbing fans no matter how they find the show.

This is going to be an awesome award show to watch. The category to watch is drama due to the three way battle with Breaking Bad, House of Cards and True Detective. Thus has been an excellent year in television.

I can not wait to deep who takes the statue. I hope I am right. This is the best award show right next to the Golden Globes.
