This week, Firehouse 51 had to battle the brutal elements of winter. Talk about timing for temperatures to drop below zero. As the gang scrambles to prepare, spreading salt and moving equipment so it doesn’t freeze, things get hectic fast. Here’s my recap and review.
A baby is left outside near the house, and Dawson finds her and brings her in. The baby is as healthy as can be, but to be sure, she needs to go to Chicago Med for a check‑up. The problem? Ambulance 61 is supposedly out of commission and being worked on by a squad member.
It isn’t until Brett tells Mills how to start it that they realize there’s nothing wrong with the ambulance at all. They soon get a call for a patient with chest pains and head out, leaving the baby with Dawson until they return.
Later, what we assume is the baby’s mother comes in asking for her child back. Boden tells her she needs paperwork to prove the baby is hers. When the firehouse gets another call, Dawson is left alone. The woman returns with what turns out to be fake paperwork, demands the baby back, and then pulls a gun on Dawson.
Boden and the rest of the team come back in the middle of the standoff. The woman insists she wants the baby, but Boden talks her down and convinces her to leave. She’s later picked up by CPD a couple of miles from the firehouse.
Meanwhile, Brett and Mills are on their call when a man flags them down, panicking about a kid who’s hurt. He’s freaking out because he and his girlfriend were doing drugs. Brett heads into a warehouse to find the girl, who clearly must have been terrified if she ran that deep into the building.
Brett finds her and tells her to walk slowly, since she’s on a damaged railing. The girl slips, falls, and is impaled on a metal rod. Mills rushes in to help, but they can’t call for backup because there’s no service.
Cruz, who’s been complaining about the cold all episode, tries calling Brett over the radio but only reaches a guy in the ambulance. Realizing something’s off, the rest of the 51 head to their location. They arrive, search the building, and ultimately get everyone out safely.
As things cool down—or maybe warm up—Dawson sees the baby finally reunited with her real parents, who are from Indiana. Boden throws a Hawaii‑themed party at the firehouse for his ailing father and gives a great speech about how they all stick together and keep moving forward.
During the episode, Severide asks Casey what’s really going on between him and Dawson, because he’s ready to move on and see someone new. At Molly’s during the party, he spots someone, makes a move, and later heads over to her place, where things definitely heat up.
The most emotional moment comes when Boden and his father sit together, talking and sharing a drink. When Boden’s son starts crying, Boden goes to tend to him so his father can rest. A few minutes later, after putting the baby down, Boden returns to find that his father has passed away in the chair, the photo album still open on his lap.
Next week’s episode looks like it’ll melt all this snow. Apparently, Casey ends up making out with the guy who’s subbing in for Boden for a while.
Also worth noting: Deadline.com is reporting that there will be another Chicago Fire backdoor pilot episode to launch Chicago Med, the spin‑off we’ve all been waiting for since Chicago PD arrived.
You can catch Chicago Fire Tuesday nights at 10/9c on NBC.
