Last season's #1 New Medical Drama returns, and the season premiere of Chicago Med jumps into Season 2 with a rush!
The episode opens with Dr. Manning in a helicopter with two patients—a father and his pregnant daughter who were in a car accident. Dr. Halstead rushes up to help and takes control as the new chief attending in the ED. Manning puts a chest tube in the mother and rushes her to CT.
High-Stakes Surgeries and a Volatile New Doctor
Later, Dr. Rhodes, Halstead, and Manning discuss a treatment for the woman that would be best for both her and the baby. Rhodes thinks putting in a stent will be fine with the baby still in the mother.
They are forced to wait, however, when the father falls and has an MI. Rhodes and Halstead rush to save him, heading to the CT and into surgery. Under a teaching mentorship, Rhodes is introduced to Dr. Latham, who says that Rhodes was not his first choice for the team. The two butt heads during surgery on which vein to take for the man’s heart. When Rhodes gives his opinion on what Downey would do, the new guy flips out and throws a pan in the OR, freaking out everyone, including me. This is going to be a great season for the two of them.
A Miracle and a Loss
After the surgery, Rhodes gets Manning's okay to put a stent in the mother's heart. During the procedure, the baby's heart rate dips, forcing them to perform an emergency C-section. In the end, both the mother and the baby are well.
Unfortunately, the father’s health fails pretty fast. Halstead and Rhodes perform CPR and do everything they can, but the man is gone. In a stunning turn of events, just as they walk away, his heart starts beating again. He gets about a minute or two with his daughter, where he sees his granddaughter for the first and last time before passing away. Talk about a miracle, right?
New Roles and Personal Struggles
Dr. Choi is dealing with his new role as Chief Resident of the ED and tries a new style of patient care that isn't working at all. In the end, he decides to go back to the old way, as Halstead tells him the nurses run the department best.
Dr. Charles gets Reese to come back and take the resident spot in his department. They take a case of a 15-year-old girl who seemed to have tried to kill herself with pain medicine. Reese talks to her, and the girl eventually reveals a rash she has. After having it checked, she freaks out, thinking she is going to die. Reese takes a skin sample and gets it tested, revealing that it's a fungus infection. It was a good start for Reese, as she's back at Med.
As for April, she still doesn't think she's good enough after having TB and taking meds for five months. But after seeing a patient who is HIV-positive kiss his wife, things kind of settle down for her.
Final Thoughts
I loved how the new season kicked off, getting right to the first trauma in the episode. The pregnant daughter and her father’s storyline just took my breath away. It was so touching to see the father die and come back for a moment just to meet his granddaughter. I also enjoy watching Halstead get tough on Jeff Clarke, even though it is personal at times. And Rhodes and Latham are going to be an interesting team this season.
Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
You can catch Chicago Med Thursday nights at 9/8c on NBC.
