Father and Daughter II: Chicago PD "The Silos" Season Premiere

In the season premiere of Chicago PD, will Erin be the one to turn Voight in for what he did to Justin's killer, or will she help steer him away from the Commander's investigation? Here's my recap and review.

The events of the season finale have clearly been haunting Erin for weeks. She gets a call from the Commander, who asks why she and Hank were at the Silos on the night they were pursuing Justin’s killer. Erin gives the Commander her version of events, but she’s not buying it.

In the meantime, Intelligence catches a case involving a car arson with a body inside, wrapped in a police wire. As they’re examining the scene, a man pulls up, asking for his son, Evan. He says his phone led him to the burned‑out car, and the body inside turns out to be Evan. It’s heartbreaking for the father, but it hits Voight especially hard, too; he’s just returned to work and knows all too well what it’s like to lose a son.

The team dives into the case and quickly learns the wire came from CPD. After going through the victim’s room, Al and Ruzek get an earful from Evan’s sister about how CPD can’t be trusted. They go back later and ask her to tell them why her brother was working with narcotics. She explains that a cop threatened her with 10 years in prison over a tiny bag of Molly unless she cooperated. Her brother found out and stepped in to take her place.

That leads Erin and Jay to confront the cop who handled the case—and Erin absolutely lets her have it. It feels like they’re about two seconds away from throwing punches; Erin would’ve won in a knockout for sure. The cop eventually gives up the suspect they were working on, and that man becomes Intelligence’s primary target.

Dawson and Atwater check the guy out at the gym and use some high‑tech surveillance to see who he’s calling. It turns out to be his baby mama, so Voight goes and picks her and her child up to help them set a trap. When Dawson and Ruzek brief her on the plan, Ruzek tells her to use a code word if things go south. She picks “banana” as her safe word.

After a plan that seems likely to fall apart at any moment, the unit manages to take the suspect down. Soon after, the Commander arrives and asks Voight to come with her. They go back to the Silos, where she asks him—twice—to confess to killing Justin's murderer and burying him there. Voight refuses to say a word, only telling her that if she had a child, she’d understand. CSI and the officers keep digging, but no body is found.

So who moved the body? Was it Erin? Was it Voight? I’m betting on Erin. She’s been wrestling with it the entire episode, and the pressure has been weighing heavily on her. I loved the scene where she’s at the Silos, staring at the ground. The wide camera shot focuses on her with this unreadable look—you’re not entirely sure what she’s going to do. In the end, she does the right thing…hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite her.

Meanwhile, with Roman gone, Burgess gets a new partner. Officer Yuen had previously been stuck writing parking tickets and going to court. She seems nice and more than ready for the job alongside Burgess. Their first case involves a woman who was raped in the back of a man’s car by someone posing as an Uber driver. The two partners butt heads at first, but with Platt's help, they nail the guy.

As for Voight, he seems to be holding it together as best he can. I thought it was incredibly sweet and moving to see Casey offer his condolences for the loss of Voight’s son. But things only get harder. On top of the Commander breathing down his neck, he comes home to find Justin’s wife and baby heading to Scottsdale, AZ, because she can’t stand to stay in a house full of bad memories. For a man who’s not only lost his son but is now losing his grandson too, it’s devastating.

There is a light at the end of the episode, though. Voight visits Erin after everything that happened at the Silos, thanks her, and, with emotion building, tells her she’s all he has left. The two share a hug.

I LOVED this episode. It’s another powerful chapter in the Erin‑and‑Hank story, highlighting their almost father‑daughter relationship. After all the ups and downs between them last season, this feels like a real step forward. I also loved the introduction of Yuen and can’t wait to learn more about her. We already know she was wrongfully put in a bad situation with one of the Commanders in her district, but thanks to Platt, I think she’ll fit into the 21st just fine.

Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.

You can catch Chicago PD Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
