Dutton Ranch (S1, Ep. 9) "El Padrino" Season Finale

The war was always coming, it was just a matter of who fired the first shot.

After weeks of simmering tension, Dutton Ranch delivers a finale that largely lives up to the hype. "El Padrino" raises the stakes with shocking betrayals, explosive action, and one devastating cliffhanger, while never losing sight of the relationship that anchors the series: Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. It's a satisfying conclusion that wraps up several lingering mysteries while setting the stage for an even bigger conflict in Season 2.

The finale wastes little time confirming the Jackson family's darkest secret. Acting on Austin's intelligence, Beth and Rip intercept a shipment of cattle at 10-Petal Ranch, where veterinarian Everett discovers millions of dollars' worth of fentanyl hidden inside the livestock. The revelation confirms the ranch has spent the past 15 years smuggling drugs for Mariano Reyes—better known as "El Padrino"—to survive devastating financial hardship. The discovery also forces Beulah Jackson to reveal the tragic events that led to the partnership, exposing decades of family secrets, betrayal, and impossible choices that have haunted the ranch ever since.

When Beulah hesitates to return the missing shipment, Mariano assumes the Duttons have stolen from him, triggering a violent cartel assault. What follows is one of the series' biggest action sequences as Rip, Beth, and their allies fight off wave after wave of gunmen in a brutal shootout that reminds viewers just how dangerous life on the ranch has become. But the emotional blow lands moments later when Joaquin betrays his own family, murdering Rob-Will in cold blood just as his daughter Oreana prepares to leave the ranch and start a new life with Carter.

The final minutes deliver a classic Yellowstone-style gut punch. After the smoke clears, Beth receives a chilling phone call from Mariano, who reveals he has kidnapped Carter. The message is clear: this isn't about drugs or money anymore—it's personal. As Rip realizes the cartel wants to hurt them through the people they love most, Beth's fearless response perfectly captures the spirit of the series: "They're gonna get us."

While a few storylines feel rushed, the finale successfully balances emotional character moments with blockbuster action. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser once again prove why Beth and Rip remain one of television's most compelling duos, while Annette Bening delivers another terrific performance as the morally conflicted Beulah. Most importantly, the finale leaves Season 2 with enormous momentum. If this looming war with El Padrino delivers on its promise, the best may still be ahead. Overall, I give the season finale a 9/10.
