The time has finally come. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are almost here, which means it's time to make some predictions before television's biggest night gets underway.
The races are looking especially interesting this year, with The Pitt and Pluribus dominating the drama conversation, Hacks trying to repeat its comedy win, and several newcomers hoping to pull off an upset. Here are my picks for who I think will take home the Emmy on the big night.
Drama
Outstanding Drama Series: The Pitt
The Pitt has been one of the biggest drama contenders all season, and I think its combination of strong writing, performances, and emotional storytelling gives it the edge.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Rhea Seehorn, Pluribus
This feels like a particularly competitive category, but Seehorn has the kind of performance that can make an Emmy voter pay attention.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series: Noah Wyle, The Pitt
Wyle has been at his best in season two.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Karolina Wydra, Pluribus
Pluribus has made a strong impression across the acting categories, and Wydra is my pick to take this one.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Shawn Hatosy, The Pitt
The Pitt ensemble has been one of the show's greatest strengths, and Hatosy gets my vote in a crowded supporting-actor race.
Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series: Vince Gilligan, Pluribus
Gilligan set the tone by directing the pilot episode of Pluribus and gives.
Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series: Valerie Chu, The Pitt
The writing on The Pitt has been a huge part of its success, making Chu my pick here.
Comedy
Outstanding Comedy Series: Hacks
Hacks remains incredibly difficult to beat. After already establishing itself as one of television's strongest comedies, I think the Emmy voters could give it another win.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: Jean Smart, Hacks
At this point, Jean Smart is almost synonymous with Emmy greatness. She's my pick to take home another trophy.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Matthew Rhys, Widow's Bay
This is one of my more interesting picks. Rhys has been a standout in Widow's Bay, and I think he has a real chance to pull off a win.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Kate O'Flynn, Widow's Bay
I'm going with another Widow's Bay pick here. O'Flynn has been one of the season's standout supporting performances.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Harrison Ford, Shrinking
Ford continues to bring plenty of heart and humor to Shrinking, making him my choice in a competitive category. Ford has given his best performance in a long time.
Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series: Lucia Aniello, Hacks
The Hacks team continues to deliver some of the sharpest comedy on television, and Aniello gets my vote.
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series: Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs & Jen Statsky, Hacks
Another Hacks prediction. The show's writing remains one of its biggest strengths, so I'm sticking with the team here because the finale was so emotional and grand.
Limited or Anthology Series
Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series: DTF St. Louis
This is one of the categories where I'm going with DTF St. Louis to take the top prize.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Matthew Rhys, The Beast in Me
Rhys gets another prediction from me, this time for his work in The Beast in Me.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie: Sarah Snook, All Her Fault
Sarah Snook has consistently shown why she's one of television's most compelling performers, and All Her Fault gives her another strong showcase.
Reality & Variety
Outstanding Reality Competition Program: The Traitors
The Traitors has been one of the best reality television shows.
Outstanding Variety Series: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert
With the late-night category always capable of producing an interesting result, I'm giving The Late Show the edge.
Of course, Emmy night rarely goes exactly according to plan. There will be surprises, unexpected wins, and at least a few moments that have everyone asking, "How did they lose?!"
We'll find out soon enough.
