New NBC Sitcom: The Carmichael Show

A new comedy is coming to NBC next week.

From the comedy of Jerrod Carmichael and Nick Stoller (Neighbors) brings you The Carmichael Show, an irreverent sitcom inspired by Jerrod's relationships with his say-anything contrarian father, therapist-in training girlfriend, ever-hustling brother and mother, who always, always, always right with Jesus.

Taking the next step and moving in together, Jerrod and his girlfriend, Maxine (Amber West), are your average young couple trying to make it in the city. They're smart, motivated and looking to build a fulfilling life together. The one thing standing in their way is family. Between Jerrod's larger-than-life brother, Bobby (Lil Rel Howery), and his smothering and passionate parents (David Alan Grier, Loretta Devine), Jerrod and Maxine will be put to the rest navigating the boundaries of romance, family and sanity.

Here's a quick look.

Jerrod Carmichael, Nick Stoller and Ravi Nandan serve as executive producers. "The Carmichael Show" is co-produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Universal Television.

You can catch the season premiere of The Carmichael Show Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 9/8c right after America's Got Talent Results with back to back episodes.

Necessary Roughness star joins Mysteries of Laura

Season two of "The Mysteries of Laura" might get interesting for Detective Laura Diamond.

According to Entertainment Weekly exclusively, "that Callie Thorne will be joining the cast of Mysteries of Laura in a recurring capacity for season two."

The Necessary Roughness alum will debuting in the season premiere as Captain Nancy Santiani. She's "the all-business new boss at the 2nd Precinct. Despite how young and small she is, "Santiani runs a tight ship and refuses to take any crap from Laura, who doles out plenty of it."

They will clash as they are two strong women that are both single mothers. They'll "find common ground and come to understand each other, even if they can't stand to be in the same room with each other."

Former Bones star joins Chicago Fire

Add another to the list!

Entertainment Weekly learned exclusively that Fredic Lehne will be joining the cast of Chicago Fire as a recurring guest role.

The former "Bones" and "Lost" star "will be playing Deputy District Chief Ray Riddle, a gruff, hard charging fire chief above Boden (Eamonn Walker)." He's "one of a new breed of politically savvy climbers in the CFD. He's gunning for the top spot of Fire Commissioner, and he doesn't seem" to care "if Firehouse 51 ends up as collateral damage in the process."

This is the fourth actor to be added to this season's recurring guest list along side with Steven R. McQueen as a new candidate, Brian White as the new Squad Lieutenant when Severide who will be demoted by Riddle. And of course, Rachel Nichols as the new love interest for Severide.

Sounds like this season of Chicago Fire will be a hell a blazing when the season premiere gets started.

Wood Picking: Playing House "Knotty Pine"

This week's episode of "Playing House" deals with Maggie and Emma hanging out with Tina, but it soon becomes a situation for Tina's marriage with Mark.

Trying to fix their relationship and be much like friends rather than enemies, Emma and Maggie took Tina out shopping. Trying to help her get some styling wear that Tina thinks is too much and fears that one dress shows a bit too much skin.

After having fun, Tina asks if the next time, they and Ouwilly will join a wood shop to make birdhouses. Emma didn't like it, but Maggie got her to agree. At first, it looked simple, but when the instructor Buck comes around, he gives the ladies some absolute pleasure of compliments.

Buck has hit on Tina and Maggie but not Emma. Later, when Maggie and Emma came in with their finished birdhouses, Buck was helping Tina learn how to use a specific wood tool. It could be a Ghost theme without the Unchained Melody playing.

Buck announces that he's DJing a party that night and asks Tina to go, and she agrees.

Soon, Maggie gets the scoop on Buck, and he hits on married women and breaks their marriages. Emma tries to tell Mark about it without saying anything.

At the party, Emma and Maggie get there and try to break Buck and Tina off; even while they are dancing, it isn't working until Mark comes in and surprises Tina.

Tina and Mark have an honest conversation about this situation, and soon after Emma and Maggie stop Buck from his doings, they find him on the curb alone. They might have broken up.

I found this episode hilarious, and there are so many good jokes from the woodworking scenes to when Emma asks Mark for help, not just once but twice. Mark is trying to solve the puzzle of who wrote Turd on the piece of paper that happened to be in pieces.

Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors Gets Air Date on NBC

On Tuesday, NBC has announced that for it's upcoming holiday film "Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" will air Thursday, December 10th at 9/8c.

The film is based on the inspiring true story of the living legend Dolly Parton's remarkable upbringing. This once in a lifetime movie special takes place inside the tight-knit Parton family as they struggle to overcome devastating tragedy and discover the healing power of love, faith and a raggedy patchwork coat that helped make Parton who she is today.

Three cast members had been recently added to the production and begins shooting this week in Atlanta.

Jennifer Nettles of "Sugerland" will play Parton's mother, Avie Lee Parton. Nettles is one of the most popular singer-songwriters in music today. Sold more than 22 million albums, achieved eight #1 singles and has won numerous awards from Grammys, ACM, CMA and CMT Music Awards. In addition, Nettles debuted her first solo album in 2014 which went to #1 on the country charts. Plus adding theater to her acting resume, Nettles made her Broadway debut as Roxy Hart in the Tony Award-winning musical "Chicago."

Gerald McRaney, one of the most respected actors of his generations, will play Grandpa Jake Owens. His career includes roles in television drama from "Deadwood" and "House of Cards," to his most current role in the Western series "Longmire." He will co-star on the upcomign TNT series "Agent X."

Ricky Schroder will portray Dolly's father, Lee Parton. Schroder has had a lengthy career dating back to when he won a Golden Globe award at the age of nine years old for the role in the heartfelt boxing film "The Champ." He was SAG nominated both individually and as a member of the cast of the Emmy Award winning police drama "NYPD Blue" and "24."

As previously announced, Alyvia Alyn Lind will portraying the 9 year old Dolly Parton. Alyvia most recently had a role in the Lifetime movie spoof "A Deadly Adoption," with Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. She also had appeared in "Masters of Sex" and "Transparent."

"Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors" is written by Pamela K. Long. She executive producers with Sam Haskell and Dolly Parton. The film is a production of Magonlia Hill Entertainment and DP Production in association with Warner Bros. Television.

SyFy's Haven Cancelled

Syfy has cancelled it's long-running supernatural series Haven after five seasons.

The series showrunner Gabrielle Stanton told The Wrap that the decision of cancellation came after wrapping up season five.

The creative team had the idea that the final 13 episodes would be it's last and that hope it will be "satisfying" finale.

"We approached as if it was going to be our final season, so we were ready for it story-wise," added Stanton.

 Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour and Adam Copeland star in the drama series that's based on Stephen King's short story "The Colorado Kid."  The story is set in a small coastal Maine town where everyday folks are stricken with "Troubles," supernatural powers that they can't control.

The season 5B premiere of Haven premieres Thursday, Oct. 8th at 10/9c on SyFy.

Chicago Fire: A New Love Interest for Severide?

We know that Chicago Fire's Kelly Severide ( Taylor Kinney) has had a history of romance with characters from both on Chicago PD and Chicago Med. But in this upcoming season, he's going to find a brand new love interest in an unexpected place.

Executive Producer Matt Olmstead tells TVGuide.com, "He's back to fling mode. Part of the ramifications of getting demoted is that he has to go to this manager trainee course that is obligatory. Sure enough, he meets someone, played by Rachel Nichols, who's sent there because she's a problem employee at the law firm she works at. So, there's a little romance that happens there that turns into a complication down the road."

That kinda ask the question about Severide's relationship with Chicago Med's April (Yaya DaCosta) now that she's staying in Chicago.

"That was a culmination of a longtime friendship," Olmstead says. "They just wanted to know what it was like."
