What do you get when you assemble Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman? You get one of the most character-driven TV series in The Old Man on Hulu. Here are my quick thoughts.
Bridges plays Dan Chase, a former CIA operative who's been hiding for thirty years til he kills an intruder who forces him to run and hide. Lithgow plays FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper, who's called to bring in Chase but also worked with him thirty years ago during an assessment that didn't go well.
While it might be a game of cat and mouse between old friends, it goes way deeper. Brenneman plays Zoe McDonald, who meets Chase as he is renting her place. The two seem to fall in love until things get dicey for Chase.
Chase has a daughter who works in the CIA. She helps him stay one step ahead of Harper, but things go south for her, Chase, and Harper later.
Based on the novel of the same name, this action thriller gives enough thrills to keep me on my seat and turning in for each episode. That's mostly coming from seeing the performances of Bridges and Lithgow; they really show chemistry even when we don't see them face-to-face near the end of the season.
Yes, it does have the same vibes as John Wick and Reacher, but I still enjoy this series and hope to see more when season two comes this fall. Overall, I give this season a 9/10.
