Balancing Act: Chicago PD "Off Switch"

Last week’s episode spotlighted Ruzek, but this time the focus shifts squarely to Atwater both in his work and his personal life. And what an episode it was. Here's my recap and review.

“Off Switch” gave us a layered look at Atwater as he tried to balance everything at once: the robbery case with Intelligence, his duties as building superintendent, and his own emotional well-being. The tension builds until you can almost feel the weight pressing down on him—especially in the scenes at the station, where his calm exterior barely conceals the exhaustion of being pulled in so many directions.

One of the most interesting threads this week was his connection with a forensic psychologist he meets at a bar. She quickly becomes part of the case, helping the victim process trauma, but also challenges Atwater in ways that feel both professional and personal. Their push-and-pull dynamic added depth to the episode, and by the end, it seems Atwater may finally be opening the door to something beyond work. Could this be the start of a meaningful relationship?

LaRoyce Hawkins anchored the episode beautifully. His performance reminded me how far Atwater has come since those early days when he, Burgess, and Ruzek were the new faces in Intelligence. Now, they’re stepping into leadership roles, carrying both the responsibility and the history of the unit. That nostalgia gave “Off Switch” an emotional weight that resonated well beyond the case of the week.

Overall, I’d call this one of the season’s stronger entries, and I’m giving it an 8.5/10.

What about you? Do you see Atwater’s new relationship lasting, or will it be another short-lived romance? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC, with episodes streaming next day on Peacock.

  1. Excellent episode 👍 I could see Kevin and Val in a long term relationship. Kevin deserves to be happy. He would make an amazing husband and unbelievable father.
