It's been five years since the last One Chicago crossover event. Did this one live up to the expectations? Here are my thoughts.
I hope everyone is doing well after that airing! It took me a few days to gather my thoughts and let me tell you, it was quite the rollercoaster ride!
"In The Trenches" was an exciting crossover, thrilling action, and a whirlwind of emotions during a spectacular movie-filled television event. This event explores the dynamics of three fascinating couples from the shows: Kidd-Severide, Platt-Mouch, and Adam and Burgess. Picture them in some intense situations, like witnessing Platt getting shot by one of the suspects and watching Ripley and Lenox do everything possible to save her—even to the point of putting her on ice! Whether or not she would make it out alive was the moment you were on the edge of your seat, or in this case, for me, I was on my feet for the entire three hours of the program. It’s hard not to feel for Mouch as he navigates the mix of emotions after forgetting Platt's birthday—what a challenging moment!
Not to mention, Stella Kidd and Adam Ruzek were trapped with about 30 other people in a subway, along with one of the suspects involved in the gas explosion. The two truly clicked while working together, which is one of the many highlights of the crossover, as well as seeing their significant others worry about them, along with Severide and Burgess, who had to maintain a strong and steady demeanor during the crisis and investigation that also includes Burgess threatening to arrest Lenox in order to interview the Jane Doe, who happens to be one of the suspects and was severely burned in the fire.
The story was solid from the start. It featured 51 at the scene of a gas explosion in front of a government building that manages employees' pensions, caused by a robbery in the building's basement. Along the way, you see the different characters from PD and Med that felt so natural (who got goosebumps when Pascal and Voight shared scenes?). And just when things seemed to be getting worse for our heroes, more challenges arose, including a rescue and an investigation. This felt reminiscent of the events from the 2017 four-show crossover (which included Chicago Justice, which I still miss) and the 2018 crossover event.
Did this crossover live up to the hype? Absolutely! It was truly worth the wait after five years since our last crossover. I was overwhelmed with emotions during this event—not only was it fantastic and filled with everything we adore about these crossovers, but it also marked the first one since my grandmother passed away in 2020. The occasion felt even more heartfelt without her here to enjoy it alongside me, yet I always sensed her spirit with me. I wish she was here with me when Brett and Casey finally made it official.
Overall, the crossover truly reignited my passion for the One Chicago franchise and reminded me of the reasons I’ve been a loyal fan for so long. Each character brought unique charm and intensity, making every moment unforgettable. As we look ahead, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we won’t have to wait another five years for the next event. This crossover brought me entertainment and warmed my heart, creating a truly memorable experience. Here’s to enjoying many more thrilling adventures with our beloved characters, and may they continue to captivate us for years to come!
