This week's episode of Outrageous, titled "Oysters and Champagne," plunges the Mitford family into a whirlwind of emotional shifts and political fractures. Amidst the chaos, Nancy begins to powerfully reset her life. Here's my recap.
Episode Recap: A Family Divided
We pick up in the aftermath of Diana's car accident. Though she survives, she's ordered to remain in the hospital for two weeks. But Diana, ever defiant, persuades her father to help her escape so she can recover at home, and, more importantly, with Mosley. Later, Diana and Mosley discuss marriage, recognizing the inevitable press scrutiny. Unity, now fully settled in Germany and reveling in her role within Hitler's party, is tasked with discreetly scouting a location for the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Decca is deeply shaken by the news that Unity is officially moving to Germany. Despite their polar-opposite politics, the emotional toll of their separation is palpable. This culminates in a bittersweet scene where Decca plays "St. James Infirmary" on the piano, a truly poignant highlight of the episode.
Nancy, for her part, invites Decca to stay with her, hoping for a change of scenery. However, these efforts backfire. A newsreel about the civil war in Spain, played during a movie, only deepens Decca's resolve as a budding communist.
As the country mourns the death of King George V, David seeks practical ways to maintain the family estate, offering part of it for rent. Diana continues to stir the tension within the family, most notably when she meets with Churchill to ask him to meet with Hitler. He firmly declines, offering her a pointed warning in return. (Also, did anyone else catch him calling her "Diana-mite"? Odd, right?)
Nancy's Reclamation & Poignant Moments
Nancy's personal journey takes a sharp turn as she begins to entertain the idea of starting a family, once Peter finally secures a solid job. But everything changes whens he unexpectedly finds Peter in bed with another woman, who happens to be her friend and the future godmother. Hurt but not broken, she grabs his money, walks out, and indulges in oysters and champagne. This scene is a sharp, symbolic moment of a restart.
Review: Balancing Emotion and Politics
"Oysters and Champagne" is a truly standout episode, expertly striking a balance between emotional growth and escalating political drama. Bessie Carter delivers a fantastic performance as Nancy, capturing both her vulnerability and quiet strength as she navigates betrayal.
I'm also deeply impressed with Zoe Brough's portrayal of Decca; her character's political conviction and emotional journey continue to impress. With rich music, heartbreak, and shifting loyalties, this episode truly captures the Mitfords on the brink of transformation and perhaps a slight disarray. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5 out of 10.
