I finally got around to watching the second season of The Diplomat on Netflix, and you can bet I won't wait that long when Season 3 drops this fall. Here are my thoughts on why this season was another standout.
With only six episodes, this season was a lean, tightly wound standout. The storytelling is fast-paced and sharp, balancing political intrigue with moments of unexpected humor and deeply human performances. While a few plot points require close attention (typical of political thrillers), everything clicks into place by the end of Episode 5. And that finale? My jaw literally dropped when the credits rolled.
Keri Russel continues to prove why Kate is one of the most compelling leads on TV right now; every second she's on screen is magnetic. Ato Essandoh delivers excellent comedic beats as the injured, recovered, yet ever-loyal deputy chief, navigating both global chaos and Kate's drama. And let's talk about Allison Janny. If she doesn't get nominated (or win) for Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her turn as Vice President Grace Pen, it'll be a genuine oversight; she absolutely nails it, and her scenes with Kate are electric. I'm eager to see where their dynamic evolves in Season 3.
Overall, The Diplomat Season 2 proves that sometimes less is indeed more, especially when done right. With tight pacing, killer performances, and a finale that demands attention, I'm giving this season a strong 9/10.
