Charlie and Alex find themselves in deep water once again in this week's thrilling and offbeat episode of Poker Face. "Day of the Iguana" brings us mistaken identities, a deadly wedding crash, and an impressive "Columbo" impression, and yes, it's as wild as it sounds. Here's my recap and review.
This time, Charlie and Alex are working a high-society wedding serving oysters (trying to make some extra cash) when things take a dark turn. Enter The Iguana (a brilliantly oddball performance from Justin Theroux), a hitman who impersonates a wedding guest to eliminate his target, Kirby (played by Haley Joel Osment). But he doesn't just kill Kirby; he also frames Alex for the murder. Cue chaos!
Alex, who's been connecting with the Iguana, stumbles upon Kirby's dead body in the boathouse before being drugged by The Iguana himself. With Alex on the run, Charlie finds herself trying to clear Alex's name without handing her over to the FBI, including Agent Luca Clark (played by Simon Helberg), who happens to be there to stream Kirby's wedding for his mother, Beatrix (Rhea Perlman).
The episode gets more interesting when Charlie realizes that the only person who could help Alex is Beatrix. Hence, they travel to where she's located (even though she's in witness protection). Meanwhile, Luca discovers from Agent Milligan (Taylor Schilling) that Kirby may not have been the intended target at all-the real mark was Beatrix. This reveal sets the stage for an explosive finale.
"Day of the Iguana" truly stands out as a fantastic episode, blending comedy, crime, and charm in a beautifully seamless manner. Theroux's Iguana is comedy gold, with the glass-eye joke and a hilarious Columbo impression that will make you smile. Honestly, they should just give Theroux his own Columbo reboot already! The guest stars might be a bit numerous, but even Schilling doesn't quite steal the scene, especially with Helberg's amusingly jealous Agent. The playful chemistry between Charlie and Alex continues to shine, and the emotional intensity deepens with every moment, showcasing the depth of their friendship and loyalty to one another. This episode shows the show's wild energy and irresistible appeal at its best.
Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
