TV ConfessionaI: Act Along with TV Shows to De-Stress

Hi, I’m Adam — and I have a confession to make.

I like to act along with TV shows. It’s not just a quirky habit, it’s my way of de-stressing, a mix of performance and pure escapism that helps me connect with the story.

I act along with TV shows. Like… fully. I deliver lines, match expressions, sometimes even gesture dramatically in the air when a character makes a powerful speech. It’s not method acting, and I’m not auditioning for anything. It’s just my own little tradition, a de-stress ritual that lives somewhere between performance and pure escapism.

Some people go for a run to clear their head. Others bake (I do, too). I recite monologues from The West Wing or throw out one-liners with the cast of Ghosts. And yes, I’ve tried to mimic that Olivia Pope walk-and-talk from Scandal more than once (coats optional, attitude required).

At first, it was just something I did quietly. You know, mouthing along with my favorite scenes or mimicking the cadence of a particularly sharp line. But over time, it became a genuine way for me to release tension, to feel present, and, weirdly enough, to reconnect with myself.

When I’m acting along with a show, I’m not worried about emails or dishes or what just happened on the news. I’m in the moment. Whether it's a courtroom drama or a heartfelt sitcom, I find myself feeling what the characters feel, and in some way, speaking their lines helps me process my own emotions, too.

There’s something empowering about saying a line aloud, even when it’s not yours. Try repeating a Succession insult and tell me it doesn’t feel a little cathartic. Or delivering an ER liner like you’re the one holding the scalpel. It’s like therapy, but with better lighting and a scripted ending.

And if you’ve never tried it? I highly recommend picking your favorite show and just… going for it. Start with a big dramatic scene or a fun one-liner. Whisper it under your breath or belt it out loud. Let yourself be ridiculous. Let yourself feel it.

Television, at its core, is about connection, to characters, to stories, to ourselves. And sometimes, the best way to connect isn’t just by watching… it’s by joining in.

So that’s my confession. I act along with TV shows. And honestly? I think you should too.

What about you?

Do you ever talk back to the TV or find yourself reciting your favorite line before the character says it? Share your own quirky TV habits in the comments or tag me on social — I’d love to hear them.

Until next time,

— Adam

That’s this month’s confession. What’s yours?
