When priceless paintings are stolen and a security guard is found dead, the question for Maggie, OA, and the gang is: Is this just about the money, or for something far bigger?
The investigation begins with a robbery carried out by suspects posing as NYPD officers. Initially, the team suspects a simple art heist. However, the case takes a sudden, dark turn when one of the suspects informs Maggie and OA that they were forced to execute their plan earlier than scheduled, and then immediately commits suicide.
Scola teams up with an art crimes expert and tracks down another suspect, leading them to a warehouse full of stolen paintings. Yet, surveillance shows that someone else arrived at the warehouse just 15 minutes prior, disabling a security camera. Maggie and OA arrive to find the paintings apparently intact, but a closer look reveals a frame that is off and discolored, indicating the true objective.
The art heist was a cover for an elaborate Russian rescue mission to extract one of the world's most wanted criminals. This realization culminates in a chaotic chase, where Maggie confronts the Russian asset and plays a dangerous game of Russian roulette, knowing he was out of bullets, to stop him.
"Captured" was a commendable episode that effectively kept the plot twist from being solely about an art thief and expanded it into a complex international affair. Given the references to Budapest and Brussels, the scope felt more like an FBI: International episode than a traditional FBI story. Still, it made me miss that series even more. Thanks, guys!
The addition of Zach Grenier as BAU Peter, a mentor to Maggie, was a great choice that added depth to her character. Their short visits have put Maggie on a path to look deep into this investigation that even puts her own life on the line when confronting their suspect at gunpoint, knowing that he was out of bullets. The episode was fast-paced and cleverly plotted, even if it had one foot outside of New York. Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.
What did you think of this week's episode of FBI? Did you get the same feeling that this seemed more like an FBI: International episode than a typical FBI case? Leave a comment.
