Tommy faces a cascade of crises that draw his attention. Here's a recap and review of this week's episode of Landman, "The Pirate Dinner."
This week, Tommy faces a cascade of crises that draw his attention. He handles the fallout from the previous episode's truck accident, tries to strategize the company's next move, deals with Cami's controversial idea to involve Gallino in the drilling problem, and gives his son, Cooper, a harsh reality check about his risky business dealings. It becomes clear why Nathan suggested early in the episode that Tommy should consider hiring a proper Landman.
Meanwhile, Angela is determined to host a proper welcome-home party for T.L. To celebrate, she throws a successful pirate-themed celebration. This follows a slightly awkward birthday party she organized with Ainsley at the assisted living facility, where the residents hilariously presented Angela with some naughty gifts. The pirate party, however, was a genuine success, giving T.L. an enjoyable evening and leaving a big smile on his face.
Cooper and Ariana come to terms with the seriousness of their relationship, and the topic of marriage comes up. Ariana tells Cooper that he has to get her father's permission first.
After his sobering talk with Tommy, Cooper takes a significant step and goes to Ariana's parents' house. He discusses his intent to marry her and asks for her father's blessing. Her father responds that he doesn't need her permission but admits that Ariana put him to the test. Cooper passes the test, but the father still insists on giving him "the talk" and invites him to stay and eat with the family.
"The Pirate Dinner" was a powerful episode from start to finish, running slightly longer than others this season to accommodate the plot. It continues to challenge Tommy's abilities as he faces obstacles on his own terms—from the truck accident investigation and Cooper's mess to his intense discussion with Cami about Gallino. Billy Bob Thornton delivers another strong performance, supported well by Andy Garcia (Gallino) and Sam Elliott (T.L.).
While the Pirate Dinner scene was a highlight worth the wait, the earlier assisted living birthday party felt like a pointless plot distraction, only serving to give Angela and Ainsley some forced humor that sometimes bordered on cringeworthy. Ultimately, the successful proposal arc made up for any filler. Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.
