"Family Business” exposes dark family secrets behind a perfect household, asking what happens when protectors hide lies. With a botched car bomb, guns for charity, and a rescue mission, it shows the deadliest secrets sit at the family table. Here's my recap and review.
The team is forced to look behind the curtain of a 'perfect' household. This week, an investigation into a botched car bombing targeting Judge Pauline Ayers took a dark, bureaucratic turn when it was revealed that her husband, Blake, wasn't just a charity director—he was a gunrunner. Using his medical supply non-profit as a front for smuggling weapons to Guinean revolutionaries, Blake’s double life eventually caught up with him in the form of a mercenary kidnapping. In a move that felt classically reckless, Kayce Dutton ditched his backup and stormed the captors' stronghold alone, neutralizing the former Delta Force operatives to bring Blake home. The physical rescue was the easy part; however, the real damage was left for their daughter, Fallon, to navigate. In a moment of gritty, Dutton-style wisdom, Kayce offered a somber perspective on the fallibility of fathers, telling the shattered girl that while perfection is a myth, the intent to protect usually justifies the lie.
While the case provided the gunpowder, the ranch drama caused the friction. Kayce’s romance with Dolly Weaver faced a setback when her father, Tom, tried to buy the East Camp ranch. Despite Monica’s shadow and the insult to his land, Kayce ended the hour back with Dolly, leaving their future open. Meanwhile, others navigated awkwardness: Cal and Belle shared a whiskey-kiss that ended after Belle’s 'open marriage' reveal, and Miles realized his social life was over when he found the bartender flirting was actually Cal’s daughter. With secret lives and failed advances, the Marshals find their biggest danger is their personal lives.
"Family Business" is a character-driven episode highlighting Kayce’s "fish out of water" energy in federal service. The gunrunning plot reflected Kayce’s complex family, with a nostalgic Easter egg of young Jamie Dutton that Yellowstone fans would enjoy. The "open marriage" subplot for Belle was unexpected, but Miles asking out his boss’s daughter added levity. While it didn't break new ground, it reinforced the team's bond and suggested Kayce might be opening up to dating life with Dolly.
Overall, I give this episode a 7/10.
What did you think of "Family Business"? With Kayce and Dolly still riding together despite her father’s land-grab attempt, do you think the Weavers are being set up as the next great rivals for the Dutton name, or is Kayce finally ready to let someone in, regardless of the price of the ranch? Do you think that Cal and Belle have a relationship beyond being co-workers? Leave a comment.
You can catch Marshals Sundays at 8/7c on CBS and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
