Marshals (S1, Ep. 8) "Blowback"

The Marshals were on the wrong side of the ink. 'Blowback' was an hour driven by ghosts of the past—both tactical errors and brothers-in-arms who refuse to stay buried. When a trap closed around our heroes, the series shifted from procedural to survival thriller. Here's my recap and review of an episode that kept the team pinned down and the audience breathless.

The episode kicks off with what appears to be a routine tip regarding a notorious bank robber, but the lead quickly reveals itself as a lethal ruse orchestrated by Randall Clegg (guest star Michael Cudlitz). Seeking a biblical "eye for an eye" after the Marshals dismantled his criminal empire earlier this season, Clegg targets the team's heart. In a jarring sequence, Cruz is T-boned by an SUV while transporting evidence and abducted by Clegg’s men. Taken to a remote, fortified compound, Cruz becomes the centerpiece of Clegg’s radical plan to "burn the land clean" of federal bureaucrats. The rescue attempt goes south almost immediately; as Kayce and the team track the kidnapping van to Clegg’s territory, they are ambushed by a well-armed militia. The hour closes on a frantic cliffhanger, with the Marshals pinned down under a hail of gunfire, outmanned and outgunned on hostile soil.

While the present-day war rages, the shadows of Afghanistan loom large over the ranch. The episode introduces Garrett (country star Riley Green in his acting debut), a former Navy SEAL who served alongside Kayce and Cal. The reunion is far from a celebration; Garrett is a man broken by war, harboring a deep-seated resentment toward Cal for a botched mission that cost their teammate his life and ended Garrett’s career. Between violent night tremors and admissions of years spent in psych wards, Garrett serves as a haunting mirror for the path Kayce is trying to avoid. Meanwhile, Cal is fighting a private battle of his own. Not only is he hiding a potentially devastating medical diagnosis from the team, but he also stumbles upon the awkward revelation that his subordinate, Miles, is officially dating his estranged daughter, Madison—adding a layer of domestic friction to an already volatile professional week.

"Blowback" is a gritty episode that builds suspense despite relying on familiar "team-in-peril" clichés. Michael Cudlitz's intense portrayal as Randall Clegg makes the threat feel real. It provides a compelling lead-up to the season finale. The predictable bank robbery ruse is balanced by emotional reunions and a tense militia ambush, keeping the story engaging. With Cruz trapped and the team under attack, the Marshals need more than badges to escape Montana safely.

For a first-time actor, Green really holds his own against the series regulars. His portrayal of Garrett’s PTSD adds a touching, important depth to the show's military backstory, offering a heartfelt emotional anchor amidst the chaos of the gunfight. The final ambush was beautifully directed, perfectly capturing the disorientation and panic of being caught in such a deadly trap. It’s the most vulnerable we’ve seen the team all season, making the moment even more powerful.

Overall, I give this episode a 7/10.

What did you think of this week's episode? With the team pinned down by a militia and Cal hiding a diagnosis that could take him out of the field, do you think Garrett will be the wildcard they need to turn the tide, or will his grudge against Cal lead to another tragedy in the dirt? Leave a comment.

You can catch Marshals Sundays at 8/7c on CBS and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
