Dutton Ranch (S1, Ep. 7) "Den of Sin"

If you thought Yellowstone was intense, Dutton Ranch reveals Texas's darker secrets. Episode 7, “Den of Sin,” exposes the Jackson family's bloody history and throws 10-Petal Ranch into chaos. With a strong cast and Annette Bening's standout performance, here's my recap.

The episode’s emotional spine comes from haunting flashbacks to August 1981 in Fort Worth. We finally learn what forged the icy armor around matriarch Beulah Jackson. As a young woman (a devastating Rebeca Robles), she sneaks out to a country bar with Mariano Reyes, only to be lured outside and brutally assaulted by Luke, a smarmy Six Flags mechanic. When Mariano finds her battered and missing a boot, Beulah forces him to lie to her controlling father, claiming she was thrown from a mechanical bull.

But a Jackson never forgets, and they certainly don’t forgive. A final flashback reveals Beulah became pregnant with Rob-Will from that horrific night. Years later, under the guise of telling Luke he’s a father, she has Mariano drive her to his house, executes him in cold blood, and calmly retrieves her missing boot. It’s a chilling, character-defining sequence that reframes everything we know about her.

In the present, an older Beulah hosts an opulent gala for the ranch’s 190th anniversary, but you can’t build a dynasty on a graveyard and expect it not to be haunted. Armed with the truth of his origin, Rob-Will corners Beulah, threatening to kill his brother Joaquin unless she names him sole heir. In front of a stunned crowd, she folds, announcing her retirement and Rob-Will as her successor, shattering Joaquin and detonating her fragile deal with Beth, Rip, and Zane Nash.

Annette Bening truly captures the screen this week, radiating her incredible talent. Meanwhile, Rob-Will is becoming an increasingly chilling villain, adding an exciting edge. The episode's writing was also quite strong, especially with the powerful backstory of Beulah. Together, these moments make for a captivating watching experience. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.

Do you think Joaquin will team up with Beth and Rip to take the ranch back by force, or is the 10-Petal doomed under Rob-Will’s control? Leave a comment.
