Sometimes catching the killer means confronting the darkness inside yourself. Here’s my review. Spoilers!
Furious sticks the landing with a season finale that delivers on its characters, its mystery, and its increasingly twisted psychological game. “Hart Island” brings Alice Black and Catherine Grace's cat-and-mouse battle to a devastating conclusion while answering one of the season's biggest questions—and leaving behind a major twist that could completely reshape Season 2.
The biggest revelation involves Isabel's death. Catherine arrives at the Easton mansion convinced she's finally going to get revenge, while Emma Easton attempts to help her take down her father, Jay. When Alice arrives, the truth about what happened years earlier finally comes to light. Jay brutally attacked Isabel, leaving her badly injured, while Emma discovered her and tried to help cover up what happened. But the biggest shock comes when Catherine's suppressed memories return. She wasn't Isabel's killer in the way we initially thought. Isabel was dying and begged Catherine to end her suffering, leading Catherine to give her a fatal dose of drugs as an act of mercy.
But the real gut punch belongs to Alice. While the FBI storms the mansion, Jay officially dies of respiratory failure—but the audience eventually learns that Alice deliberately caused his death. After Jay recognizes her from one of the horrific videos in his collection and cruelly reveals that he remembers her, Alice makes a choice. She steps on his ventilator wire, suffocating him while pretending to call for help. It's a chilling moment because the woman who spent the entire season pursuing justice has now crossed a line of her own.
Emmy Rossum is phenomenal throughout the finale and delivers what I would consider a performance of the week. Her portrayal of Alice's anger, trauma, determination, and eventual transformation gives the character so much emotional complexity. Honestly, if Rossum maintains this level of work, I could absolutely see myself putting her in my early Emmy conversation for next year.
The finale also gives the supporting characters meaningful endings. Danny helps Alice escape and ultimately leaves the NYPD, choosing to help her heal from everything she's endured. Nora receives the evidence from Alice and gives her access to the FBI's sensitive materials, telling her to "Search Alice." And then comes the final twist: Easton's files contain information on more than 50,000 people who downloaded Alice's childhood abuse video.
That revelation completely changes the game. Alice has spent the entire season trying to bring one monster to justice, only to discover an enormous list of people connected to her trauma. Now that she knows who they are, the question becomes what she's willing to do with that information.
Furious ends its first season on an incredibly strong note. It's emotional, disturbing, character-driven, and willing to take its protagonist into some very dark territory. The finale answers enough questions to feel satisfying while opening the door to an entirely different story for Season 2. After that final reveal, I'm very curious—and a little nervous—to see what Alice does next. Overall, I give this episode a 9.5/10.
