Just when Lucky and John finally start confronting the truth about their complicated relationship, the episode pulls the rug out from under them with a finale-ready cliffhanger.
The penultimate episode of Apple TV+’s Lucky, “Wherever You Go, There You Are,” trades some of the series’ usual high-speed action for something even more compelling: the complicated relationship between Lucky and her father, John. With excellent performances from Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothy Olyphant, and the rest of the cast, the episode delivers a strong mix of family drama, emotional revelations, and escalating danger that sets the stage for what should be a wild series finale.
The episode begins with Lucky and John sitting in an FBI boardroom, where Agents Billie Rand and Gates demand the seed phrases to unlock the missing $10 million. Lucky refuses to cooperate unless she receives immunity and John’s prison sentence is commuted. Eventually, the FBI strikes a deal: Lucky will wear a wire and help draw out Priscilla and Whittaker in exchange for her freedom.
What makes the episode work so well, though, is how much time it gives Lucky and John to confront their past. John sees their childhood as an adventurous life filled with memorable experiences, while Lucky remembers something far more complicated. She finally tells him just how frightening and unstable it was growing up with a con man for a father.
Taylor-Joy and Olyphant are fantastic in these scenes. Their chemistry makes the father-daughter relationship feel complicated rather than simply dysfunctional. Lucky clearly loves her father, but she also carries years of resentment toward him. The biggest emotional gut punch comes when Lucky admits that she was the anonymous source who helped put Priscilla—and eventually John, behind bars. For once, John is forced to confront the consequences of the life he gave his daughter.
His apology before Lucky leaves for the sting operation is one of the episode’s quieter but most effective moments. There’s a genuine sense that John finally understands why Lucky wants something different for herself.
Of course, Lucky isn’t going to let that emotional moment last.
The FBI sets up a dangerous sting, sending Lucky alone to meet Whittaker while John remains behind at a secure hotel. When Agent Gates hears something outside John's room, he investigates—and is suddenly shot dead by a masked gunman. Moments later, the gunman breaks into John's room, leaving his fate completely unknown.
And that is where the episode leaves us.
After spending much of the hour digging into Lucky and John’s relationship, the cliffhanger immediately reminds us that this is still a thriller—and the danger is far from over. It’s an excellent setup for the series finale, and after that final shot, I’m definitely ready to see what happens next. Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
