Chicago Med Season 11 had plenty of strong moments—but it never quite reached the heights of Season 10.
Season 11 of Chicago Med was a good season, but for me, it never quite reached the level of Season 10—especially when it came to building longer-running story arcs. There were plenty of strong character moments, medical emergencies, and emotional developments, but some of the season's biggest twists felt predictable by the time they arrived.
The Caitlin Lenox and Mitch Ripley storyline is probably the best example. The first half of the season did a great job putting Caitlin in the middle of a difficult situation involving an abused wife, eventually leading to Caitlin and Mitch being held hostage. The hostage situation itself wasn't much of a surprise, but it did move their relationship forward as both began acknowledging their feelings for one another. Caitlin's acceptance of her illness also gave the storyline a much deeper emotional layer, making her journey one of the season's most compelling.
Hannah Asher and Dean Archer also had a strong season, particularly as their relationship evolved around Hannah's unexpected pregnancy. The finale raised the stakes when Gaffney went into a Code Silver lockdown while Hannah went into labor. After being taken hostage, Archer survived the crisis and rushed to Hannah's side in time for the birth of her daughter, Mabel. His eventual confession of his romantic feelings for Hannah was a great payoff to their complicated relationship.
But one of my favorite storylines this season was Dr. Daniel Charles. Watching Charles fight to protect his position and legacy at Gaffney while dealing with Theo's attempts to push him out, not to mention dealing with stroke, gave the character some much-needed dramatic weight. Dr. Frost also had an emotional journey as he confronted his past and learned that his estranged father had entered hospice care.
Then there's Sharon Goodwin, whose professional future may be the biggest question heading into Season 12. After dealing with manipulation from the hospital's administration and confronting the people threatening her position, Goodwin's job was left hanging in the balance. Add in the continued deterioration of her ex-husband Bert's dementia, and she's entering the new season with plenty on her plate.
My Chicago Med Season 12 Wishlist
Build the story arcs better. My biggest hope is that the show takes more time developing its major storylines instead of making the destination too obvious. The Caitlin storyline had some great emotional moments, but I often felt like I could see where it was heading well before the characters got there. Give these stories room to breathe and surprise us.
Give Caitlin and Mitch a chance. I'm really looking forward to seeing where Caitlin and Mitch's relationship goes after everything they've been through. With Sarah Ramos expecting a baby, we may not see Caitlin during the first part of the season, but hopefully the show can keep their story alive and give them the attention it deserves when she returns.
Bring the Med family back together. One thing Chicago Med has always done well is creating memorable character combinations, so I'd love to see another reunion involving some familiar faces. Whether it's a returning character or simply bringing more of the current ensemble together, Gaffney could use another reminder of its history.
Let Goodwin fight for Gaffney. Sharon Goodwin has faced plenty of battles over the years, but this one feels bigger. I'm excited to see her fight to keep her job and stand up to the people trying to manipulate the hospital. Goodwin is at her best when she's protecting Gaffney, and I hope Season 12 gives her a major storyline worthy of her character.
Season 11 may not have been my favorite season of Chicago Med, but there is still plenty of potential heading into the next chapter. Caitlin and Mitch have unfinished business, Archer and Asher have a new chapter ahead of them, Charles has his own battle to fight, and Goodwin's future at Gaffney is anything but certain.
Now the question is whether Season 12 can take those pieces and build something less predictable, and a little more like the Chicago Med we know it can be.
