After a dramatic resignation shakes up Washington, The Diplomat returns for Season 5 with Kate and Hal facing an uncertain future outside the roles that defined them.
Netflix is keeping The Diplomat in the political spotlight, renewing the Keri Russell-led thriller for a fifth season. But after Season 4’s dramatic finale, the next chapter could look very different for Kate Wyler.
Season 4 debuted earlier this month and climbed to No. 3 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list during its second week. The series stars Russell as Kate, alongside Rufus Sewell as her husband, Hal, and Allison Janney as President Grace Penn. Bradley Whitford also stars as Grace’s husband, Todd, while Doctor Who alum Jodie Whittaker joined the cast as the new British prime minister.
The latest season raised the stakes when Grace survived an assassination attempt before pushing the United States toward the brink of war with Russia. Kate strongly opposed the president’s actions, ultimately resigning as ambassador during the G7 summit in protest. Hal followed her out the door, leaving the couple’s next move uncertain.
Since premiering in 2023, The Diplomat has earned critical acclaim and 10 Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. Janney also won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
With Kate stepping away from diplomacy, Season 5 has plenty of new political and personal territory to explore.

I wish you wouldn't include details of the 4 season finale...
