It's the year of the medical dramas this television season. With Code Black on CBS and NBC, not only has Chicago Med, but I now have a new medical series, Heartbeat. This new series has a pulse that shows a lot of heart and character.
Based loosely on the life and achievements of Dr. Kathy Magliato, Melissa George plays Dr. Alex Panttiere, the top female heart surgeon in the country. She cares for her patients and will do anything to get what they need to live. It's a heart transplant.
With one case of a young patient needing a heart, Alex gets word that a patient has died, and the family will sign the donor papers. But when Alex's boss, Millicent Patel (Shelley Conn), tells her that the board decided to give the heart to another person, that makes Alex upset and searches for a patient who is near death.
But when her patient's boyfriend decides to give his heart in the worst way, he shoots himself with a gun, but it offers Alex the heart that her patient needs to get. But when Patel tells her that the board has to decide the outcome of where or not to take the guy's organs. But when Alex's patient goes into cardiac arrest, she doesn't wait and performs a surgery that will affect not only the patient's heart but also her boyfriend's heart, and it has only been done by four other doctors. And after performing it, Alex becomes the fifth doctor.
But even though she knows what's best for her patients, she has some trouble with her relationships. She's a mother of two with a musician who's gay, but they are still close. She's dating Dr. Pierce Harrison (Dave Annable), but when word has it that her mentor, Dr. Jessie Shane (Don Hany), is working at St. Matthews, old flames return to her.
Heartbeat has an excellent ensemble cast. George is remarkable and challenging. Conn, Annable, Hany, and Hughley, as the psychiatrist, are also excellent. I can't believe Jamie Kennedy is in this series, and he brings enough creepy humor to like him just a bit.
Overall, I give this episode a 7.5/10.
You can catch Heartbeat at its regular time on Wednesday nights at 8/7c on NBC.
