Heartbeat Cancelled After One Season

The diagnosis didn't look good at the beginning for NBC's medical drama Heartbeat and now it's future is certain that there won't be a second season.

NBC announced Friday that Heartbeat won't be returning for a second season. The show got picked up for the fall season after The Voice but was pushed back due to Melissa George's pregnancy. It still got a preview after The Voice but didn't do well on it's second night with a 1.4 adults 18-49 demo rating.

The numbers didn't approve for the medical show on it's Wednesday nights at 8pm slot where it replaced The Mysteries of Laura.

I assume the network will air the remaining episodes or burn them off sometime during the summer.

Along with Heartbeat, Undateable, Crowded and Telenovela have been cancelled.

So far two other shows are awaiting their on the news, Laura and The Carmichael Show, for which are highly likely getting another season.

A Pulsing New Medical Drama: Heartbeat "Pilot"

It's the year of the medical dramas this television season. With Code Black on CBS and NBC, not only has Chicago Med, but I  now have a new medical series, Heartbeat.  This new series has a pulse that shows a lot of heart and character.

Based loosely on the life and achievements of Dr. Kathy Magliato, Melissa George plays Dr. Alex Panttiere, the top female heart surgeon in the country. She cares for her patients and will do anything to get what they need to live. It's a heart transplant.

With one case of a young patient needing a heart, Alex gets word that a patient has died, and the family will sign the donor papers. But when Alex's boss, Millicent Patel (Shelley Conn), tells her that the board decided to give the heart to another person, that makes Alex upset and searches for a patient who is near death.

But when her patient's boyfriend decides to give his heart in the worst way, he shoots himself with a gun, but it offers Alex the heart that her patient needs to get. But when Patel tells her that the board has to decide the outcome of where or not to take the guy's organs. But when Alex's patient goes into cardiac arrest, she doesn't wait and performs a surgery that will affect not only the patient's heart but also her boyfriend's heart, and it has only been done by four other doctors. And after performing it, Alex becomes the fifth doctor.

But even though she knows what's best for her patients, she has some trouble with her relationships. She's a mother of two with a musician who's gay, but they are still close. She's dating Dr. Pierce Harrison (Dave Annable), but when word has it that her mentor, Dr. Jessie Shane (Don Hany), is working at St. Matthews, old flames return to her.

Heartbeat has an excellent ensemble cast. George is remarkable and challenging. Conn, Annable, Hany, and Hughley, as the psychiatrist, are also excellent. I can't believe Jamie Kennedy is in this series, and he brings enough creepy humor to like him just a bit.

Overall, I give this episode a 7.5/10.

You can catch Heartbeat at its regular time on Wednesday nights at 8/7c on NBC.

Heartbeat: A New Medical Drama

A new medical drama comes to NBC this week with a preview Tuesday, March 22 at 9/8c and the premiere Wednesday, March 23rd at 8/7c.

Heartbeat is loosely based on the life and achievements of Dr. Kathy Magliato. This unique character driven medical drama follows Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George, "The Slap), an out-spoken renowned heart transplant surgeon and one of few women in her field.

Stubborn and fearless, Alex operates on her own terms. She revels in a racy personal life that's a full-time job in itself, manages the daily demands of skeptical faculty and dutiful interns. She pushes the boundaries of medical science and to impressive new heights.

Along with George, the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Shelley Conn, D.L. Hughley, Jamie Kennedy, Maya Erskine, JLouis Mills and Joshua Leonard.

Jill Gordon severs as the writer and executive producer. Amy Brennenman, Brad Silberling and director Robbie Duncan McNeill serves as executive producers. While Susan Carlson, Eric Carlson, Kelly Meyer and Dr. Kathy Magliato serves as co-executive producers.

Here's the trailer:

Heartbeat will air a preview episode Tuesday, March 22 at 9/8c after The Voice and premiere on it's regular night the following night Wednesday, March 23rd at 8/7c on NBC.
