This Is Us: Quick Recap and Final Thoughts Before Series Finale

We're just hours away from the end of an era when the series finale of This Is Us airs. While I haven't been writing a recap/review of the episodes this season, I thought this would be the perfect time to write a quick recap and final thoughts. Here we go!

The sixth and final season of This Is Us has been pure excellence. We've seen Kevin and Madison dealing with sharing parenting duties after they called the wedding off this season. Madison begins to date a new guy, who turns out to be her future husband. Kevin, who returns to do The Manny reboot, tries to figure out if he'll ever be in a relationship...yes.

Meanwhile, we see Beth as a mentor to dance students recruited for the scholarship program, and one student, Stacey, reminded Beth of her young self. After Stacey falls during her performance, Beth encourages her to get back up and finish her performance, which she does. Not to mention that Beth called her dancing teacher, Vincent, who told him that she'd be supporting all of her students.

Randall and Beth deal with Deja's trip to see Malik and the aftermath of what had happened. Randall tells Malik that he needs to break up with her so she can have a future. It didn't go too well, but the breakup was mutual, and who knows if we'll see Malik again (maybe?). Randall, who's been dodging calls, might be considering running for Senator. After a road trip with Rebecca, he decides to go for it.

While Toby has been in San Fransico, it's been putting his and Kate's marriage in jeopardy. After arguing over how to do things, the boiling point comes on Thanksgiving, and the two made plans to spend some time together for the weekend in San Franciso. But Kate learns that Toby had a job offer in LA but didn't want it because of money. That made Kate decide to go for the available teaching position. But after going to a marriage therapist, Katoby is no more.

Rebecca's health declines, and by the time Kate and Phillip's wedding day comes, the progression starts to show, and Randall sees that it takes a toll on Miguel. But when it was time for Rebecca to perform for Kate and Phillip, it was an overwhelming moment of magic. Not to mention, Kevin finds his true love in Sophie after coming to terms with and learning from his mistakes that it is time to give this one last shot and show Sophie Valentine's daDayard that he made for her on his first day in class.

Miguel's caretaking of Rebecca takes a considerable toll when The Big Three takes notice. They talk to him and offer help not just for her but for him, too, while still being by her side. But sadly, with his own declining health, Miguel dies.

After the passing of Miguel, the Big Three tries to figure out what to do about Rebecca. Kate and Randall suggested they would have her living near them; Kevin and Sophie came forward to have their mother stay at the cabin and be with her daily.

Jumping forward, we see that the time is near for Rebecca; the family comes and gives their last thank you moment with her. But we also see Rebecca on a train walking with William and bumping into a few familiar faces like Dr. K and even, you guessed it, Jack.

But we see a family heading home from a soccer game until an accident occurs, leaving a kid with serious injuries. The father makes his way to get coffee and bumps into Jack, who just had his house on fire. Learning about the kid, Jack gives the same advice to the father that Dr. K gave to him. As soon as the kid's health goes from bad to good, we see that Jack has died.

But Kate, who's on a plane back, might not make it in time, but she gets there to tell her she's there and loves her. As Rebecca hears her, she takes that last step at the end of the train; she takes her final breath with The Big Three surrounding her. As we see Rebecca walking into the bedroom, she sees Jack there, too.

The sixth and final season of This Is Us has been the most emotional. The season has hit with so much cry-time, whether it's the first five seconds, minutes to 15 to 20 minutes or the final moments of an episode.

The performances from the cast are beyond amazing. I'm putting all my chips into This Is Us to make some Emmys this year. How can you not deny what this show has done this season? The writing has been outstanding, and the performances have even been better. While I think everyone deserves the Emmy nominations, the one that I believe deserves a nomination and win would be Mandy Moore.

Moore has grown so much through the past six seasons that it shows in this final season. I can pick many moments, but my top two performances were the conversation that Rebecca gave Kevin, Randall, and Kate during Thanksgiving and that moment when Rebecca performed at Kate's wedding, not knowing if she would perform well or not.

The season has hit very close to home for me, as I was a family home care aide for ten-plus years, and as it was shown with Miguel, caring for someone takes a huge toll. It offers a strong message that we must care for everyone caring for someone, including nurses and doctors. It's hard to ask for help when you've been caring for someone for so long. Once you have a routine, it's hard to have someone take you away from your way.

The final episode this Tuesday, I feel, will be more of a reflection, and while I know there's going to be some crying time, there will be some uplifting advice and inspiration. I don't want the end to come, but everything must come to an end. It's been one heck of a six-season ride with the Pearsons.
