Well, changes are coming, and they were evident in the season premiere of Chicago Fire. Here's what happened.
Let's just rip the bandaid right off, talking about the new Chief at Firehouse 51, Dom Pascal, who shows much authority and wants the team to bond with one another by leaving their phones during meal breaks. He even looks upon his lieutenants for a more in-depth one-on-one of the rescues, like the one they went through with fire at a local fun show where shrapnel shoots out. Pascal did handle that rescue like a real badass, walking down to rescue like he was Voight.
While Severide and Herrmann adapt to the new Chief, Stella struggles and tries to avoid his meeting. Also, Stella tells Severide about having a family with him and getting his support while waiting to start a family. Something tells me they will begin to that family by the end of the season.
Speaking of family, Severide and Damon are bonding pretty well, enough that Cruz is beginning to worry. But that's not all for Severide, as Pascal mentioned the rule about working the same shift with a family member—his wife.
Mouch starts questioning Herrmann's reason for missing out on the chief exams, which is because of getting sick, but Mouch gives him a pep talk about how great he would be to be the leader of 51. That might get his confidence going again, right?
Violet and Novak help a family in a car accident, but when Novak hears the little girl tell her that her daddy crashed on purpose, they start to question what really happened. After CPD is told by the mother of the girl that she must have misunderstood, Novak and Violet decide to talk to the girl once again and get the truth; unfortunately, it's a painful truth for the wife and mother to take.
Speaking of Violet, what the hell is going on with Carver? I know this might just be a storyline for the characters, but has Carver returned to his old ways with someone who might be trouble for him this season? Even Stella is starting to worry, and that's not good at all.
From what I've seen from Pascal, I like him. He's not Boden, and no one will ever top Boden. He has his methods, and Pascal has his, and what has been presented so far seems like usual stuff. What interests me more is what he is hiding and why his wife is mad at him for moving back to Chicago.
Also, I hope this is more than just another one-and-done season for this character. I would like to have someone stay on for at least two to three seasons, which will go on until Herrmman takes the Chief spot.
"A Monster in the Field" was a fantastic season premiere with changes to take in from the new chief. The episode sets the tone for the season, with Severide dealing with changes from Pascal, Stella, and even his brother. I really hope in one episode that he yells out, "That's my brother, damn it!" (that's from a classic firefighter movie). Will the working relationship affect Severide and Stella with Pascal as their boss? Is Cruz jealous about Severide's relationship with Damon? WTF is going on with Carver?
I'm so pumped to see what's going to happen this season. By the end of the season, Severide and Stella will somehow start that family, leaving it as a big cliffhanger at the end of the season. Dermot Mulroney has really made a presence as the new chief of 51. So far, after the first episode, he's proven to me that he's the right casting choice for the role.
Overall, I give the episode a 9/10.
What did you think of the season premiere? What did you think of Mulroney's first appearance as Chief Pascal? Leave a comment!
