The Secret World of Alex Mack turns 30

It's hard to believe that ER celebrated its 30th birthday last month. Even more surprising, my all-time favorite Nickelodeon series reached the big 3-0 today.

Growing up watching Nickelodeon in the early '90s was fantastic. It was a hugely popular children's network with shows like "Are You Afraid of the Dark," "Rugrats," and "Clarissa Explains It All," to name a few. However, one show that premiered on October 8, 1994, truly amazed me: "The Secret World of Alex Mack."

The series starred Larisa Oleynik as Alex, who is starting her first day of school when she suddenly experiences a chemical accident that spills on her, giving her powers ranging from telekinesis to transforming herself into liquid. Oleynik portrays the character so authentically (think E.T. for a teenager) that there is a genuine care for her, which drew me in from the very beginning.

The Mack family features an incredible cast of supporting characters alongside Alex, including her scientist dad, George, her business-savvy mom, Barbara, and her clever sister, Anne. Growing up, I always dreamed of having a family like that! And let’s not forget about Alex's best friend, Ray! He’s such a fantastic companion, embodying our reactions as viewers and providing unwavering support for Alex as she navigates her unique powers.

Then there’s Vince and Dave, the quirky duo trying to track Alex down for their boss, Danielle Atron. They add comic relief to the show, always hatching new plans to catch up with Alex!

This series captured hearts as a hit on Nickelodeon's Saturday night SNICK program and quickly became a beloved staple during its four-season run. The finale had us all buzzing with curiosity about Alex's secret reveal—did she ever choose to take the cure to end her powers?

This was my show as a kid. While there were fans of Power Rangers, Batman: The Animated Series, and X-Men who dominated the airwaves for '90s kids, I was an Alex Mack fan. There was something special about that character that I could relate to and cheer for. Rewatching the pilot episode today brings back so much nostalgia that still moves me emotionally and keeps me engaged as a viewer. Plus, the theme song is absolutely amazing, too.

On this 30th anniversary of Alex Mack's premiere, I highly recommend watching it. Episodes are available on YouTube, or you can order the complete series on Amazon.
