Recap: FBI "Takeover" Season Premiere

The new FBI season started dramatically and ended tragically with Isobel injured and Jubal leading a chaotic hostage rescue on a remote island. The mission to save Bell and OA involved a firefight, a destroyed bridge, and a loss of life. Here's my full review of the intense premiere, "Takeover."

The season premiere of FBI wasted no time throwing the team into chaos. With Isobel sidelined, recovering from a severe head trauma suffered in the season finale’s explosion, Jubal was assigned to fill in, immediately facing a case that spiraled out of control.

The Case: A Missing Judge and a Hostage Crisis

The team initially investigates a missing federal judge who was searching for his own missing son. The trail leads the agents to a secluded town located on a tightly-controlled island. When Bell and OA find the judge dead, they cleverly use information from a deceased suspect to track his son to the island.

The situation quickly escalates into a full-blown hostage crisis, trapping not only the judge's son but also Bell and OA. To cut off any immediate backup, the hostiles blow up the bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

An Agent Down

Jubal, desperate to extract his agents, sends in Scola and Rhodes with FBI S.W.A.T. However, they immediately come under heavy fire, resulting in Rhodes taking a gunshot to her stomach.

Bell and OA figure out the town's chilling secret: the operation is orchestrated by local man, that had mislead the Mayor. The two agents manage to escape and are immediately surrounded by the armed townspeople, only for Scola and the injured Rhodes to arrive and corner the mayor and their key suspect.

A Hero's Goodbye and Isobel's Fate

The celebration is short-lived. Rhodes' vest failed to stop the bullet, and she bleeds out, tragically dying by the end of the episode. It was a heroic exit for Dani Rhodes (Emily Alabi), who ultimately sacrificed herself for the mission and her team.

Meanwhile, the episode offered a quick but necessary update on Isobel. Though the early worry and panic were intense, it was quickly confirmed that her surgery was successful, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

"Takeover" was an engaging season opener with a strong case-of-the-week that took an unexpectedly shocking turn. The decision to kill off Dani Rhodes was truly heartbreaking and will have lasting effects on the team. My only minor critique is the Isobel storyline; while it’s great that she’s safe, the quick jump from life-threatening danger to full recovery felt rushed. For such a significant character event, I would have preferred to see the emotional impact and her healing process developed over the initial episodes.

Overall, the writing was good, the performances were solid, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I give it an 8/10.
