From the death of a social media influencer, which unfolds with an unexpected twist, to a Halloween-themed murder case, here is a recap and review of episodes five and six of High Potential.
"Content Warning"
When Morgan and the Major Case Squad took on a murder case involving a social media influencer, it took a sharp and unexpected turn. They quickly discovered that the person they had initially believed was the victim wasn't. The deceased was an undercover investigative journalist exposing the dark side of the influencer world.
The suspects were a crowded field, ranging from other social media personalities who had pranked her to the victim's own social media boss, who was the first to realize her true identity.
The investigation uncovered an even larger plot: the journalist was targeting a company that was peddling a new protein powder. This investigation not only led to the death of the company's spokesperson but also gave Morgan the crucial idea of who was behind the entire mess: the company's CEO, who was smuggling drugs inside the protein powder shipments.
Internal and Personal Drama
While the team pursued the case, Wanger decided to camp out in Major Case for a few days to conduct one-on-one conversations with the crew. He spoke with everyone from Oz to Daphine, but when he got to Karadec, the conversation seemed oddly focused entirely on Morgan. After avoiding him for much of the episode, Morgan and Wanger finally spoke, and he appeared genuinely interested in her unique approach to solving cases.
Meanwhile, Morgan was preoccupied with the backpack Roman had, pressuring Auther to retrieve it. Auther was hesitant until Morgan cornered him again, this time interrupted by a surprise visit from Ava, whose unexpected arrival clearly upset Morgan. By the end of the episode, Morgan got the backpack after Auther delivered it to her—but she kept it secret from Ava.
Review: A Strong Blend of Case and Character
"Content Warning" was another engaging episode, featuring the usual tight case-of-the-week formula with a fun twist: the influencer's death leading to her true identity as a journalist.
The main highlights were the ongoing character developments. Wanger's conversations with the squad, particularly the strange focus on Morgan during his chat with Karadec, felt genuinely intriguing and slightly ominous. Even more notable was the deepening Morgan-Ava-Auther storyline about the backpack, which sparked another heated argument and made the sisters' fractured relationship feel even more solid and complicated. The episode delivered a potent mix of police procedural action and personal drama. Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.
"Chasing Ghosts"
When a man is found dead in a supposedly haunted mansion, the question for Morgan and the Major Case Squad is simple: Was it the ghost of the past, or murder?
The team pushes past the spooky atmosphere and quickly realizes the case involves a very human killer. They dive into a suspect pool that includes the victim's wife and daughter. However, appearances are deceiving, as Morgan ultimately discovers the killer was actually the spiritual guide the victim had consulted about the supposed hauntings. The guide, instead of seeking spirits, was looking for a secret room in the mansion where a valuable necklace was hidden.
The Personal Haunting
Meanwhile, Ava has been giving Morgan the silent treatment for an entire week following their argument over retrieving Roman's backpack. The two finally talk it out, with Ava agreeing to be more trusting and listen to Morgan going forward.
The reconciliation is put to the test immediately when Ava sees the backpack. Peeking inside, she notices a drawing of her at her first-grade dance recital, a recital Roman had been at, even though he had disappeared from their lives by that time.
Review: A Perfect Spooky Season Treat
"Chasing Ghosts" was a fantastic, Halloween-themed episode with excellent scares and truly memorable moments, making it worth rewatching during the spooky season. The case itself was gripping; I genuinely thought the daughter was the killer, so the reveal that the spiritual guide was behind the murder for the hidden necklace was a great surprise.
The supporting elements also shone. Wanger's persona was exceptionally calm this week, from interviewing the first suspect with a knowing confidence to admitting details about his past relationship with Morgan. And the Ava-Morgan storyline remains the heart of the series; the episode's resolution, where they finally reach an understanding, followed by the touching discovery of the drawing in Roman's backpack, was incredibly poignant.
Strong performances and compelling mystery make this an easy recommendation. Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.
