Could Tommy's job be in jeopardy with Cami? Here's a recap and review of Landman's "Dark Night of the Soul."
As the offshore drilling deal reaches a critical point, Tommy brings his father, T.L., to a high-stakes meeting in Fort Worth with Cami and Danny "Gallino" Morrell. Tommy presents what he believes is the most strategic deal for M-Tex, but the tide has turned. Gallino counters with a different offer, and in a move that signals a significant shift in authority, Cami sides with Gallino.
The professional tension is momentarily interrupted by a raw, personal outburst. While at the meeting, T.L. gets into a physical altercation with an old acquaintance who insults the memory of his late wife, Dottie. After Tommy gets the situation under control, he demands answers from his father.
In one of the most powerful moments of the episode, T.L. opens up about the trauma Dottie endured after the loss of their baby. Despite the "bad place" she ended up in, T.L. explains that he never stopped seeing the good in her. This vulnerable exchange adds a beautiful layer of depth to their father-son relationship.
Meanwhile, Cooper is moving forward with his plan to propose to Ariana. Following Tommy's advice, he reaches out to Angela about engagement rings. Angela, in a surprisingly selfless move, offers him her own ring so he doesn't start married life in debt (while cheekily implying that Tommy will be buying her a new one soon).
Cooper also passes a major social test: an honest, heartfelt conversation with Isabel, Ariana's grandmother. He opens up about his past struggles with understanding love and how Ariana makes him feel truly special, successfully winning her over.
In Corpus Christi, Rebecca continues her investigation into the offshore well. She seeks out a specialist geologist, who turns out to be Charlie Newsom, the man she bonded with on her flight a few episodes ago. While they attempt to focus on the technical data, their natural chemistry takes center stage.
The episode concludes with a "celebration" in Fort Worth to celebrate the new deal. Amidst the luxury, there are two standout moments: Angela brings some joy to the room by getting T.L. out on the dance floor with the ladies, and Gallino pulls Tommy aside for a sobering conversation, warning him that Cami's growing distrust could eventually lead to Tommy being "canned" if the deal goes south.
"Dark Night of the Soul" truly was a remarkable episode that masterfully blended the intrigue of the corporate world with profound, multi-generational trauma. The chemistry between Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott is simply unforgettable; their interactions highlight some of the most heartfelt character development we've seen so far in the series.
Cooper’s journey of growth is genuinely touching, especially his honest feelings for Ariana, which add a warm, sincere note amid the often ruthless backdrop of the oil industry. The tension between Tommy and Cami really keeps you on the edge of your seat. Cami choosing to support a cartel-linked "angel investor" over Tommy hints at an exciting and potentially explosive finale ahead. All in all, I’d gladly rate this episode an 8.5/10.
