Recap: High Potential "The One That Got Away: Part Two" Winter Premiere

High Potential kicked off its winter premiere with an exciting and high-stakes episode that beautifully resolved the cliffhanger from the mid-season finale. It also took Morgan’s personal story into a new, thrilling direction. Here's my recap and review of the winter premiere.

The episode opens with Morgan "benched" by Captain Wagner, though she’s anything but idle. After a brief, awkward appearance at the crime scene—hitching a ride with Rhys after their tryst—she spends the first half of the episode trying to prove he’s the culprit. Her search of his hotel room turns up nothing, but the team uncovers a deeper rot.

The "stolen" Rembrandt, Young Girl Leaning on a Windowsill, was actually part of a clever insurance scam devised by its owners, the Fosters. Struggling with increasing debts, they commissioned a fake and staged the theft, hoping to claim the $20 million insurance money. Sadly, the museum director, Cyrus, lost his life when he became too greedy and attempted to ransom the painting on his own.

The "cat-and-mouse" game between Morgan and Rhys reached its peak on the Fosters' boat. As Wagner and Karadec close in on the couple, Rhys makes off with the real masterpiece. In a final beachside confrontation, Morgan realizes Rhys isn’t a cold-blooded thief but a "Robin Hood of Art" who ensures stolen pieces return to their rightful owners. She lets him go, a decision she must hide from Wagner's suspicion.

While the art heist provided the fun, the Roman's Backpack storyline provided the dread. Arthur reveals he was attacked by a man with a distinct bird tattoo—the same man pictured in Roman’s old photos. Despite Selena Soto attempting to provide undercover protection at his gym, the episode ends with a chilling discovery: Arthur has vanished, leaving only his phone behind.

"The One That Got Away: Part Two" was a standout episode that balanced its tonal shifts perfectly. The chemistry between Morgan and Rhys was a fun distraction, but the episode’s real meat was Karadec's unwavering loyalty to Morgan, even as Wagner tried to drive a wedge between them. The "Foster Forgery" was a clever reveal that beautifully showcased Morgan’s hyper-observational skills (those "too bright" eyes in the painting). Arthur’s disappearance raised the stakes for the Roman mystery, proving that the people hunting the backpack were not just dangerous—they were ahead of the police. And that mysterious bearded man watching Morgan and Wagner from the shadows at the bar was a perfect "hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck" moment to end the night. Overall, I give it an 8/10.

What did you think of the episode? With Arthur missing and the "Bird Tattoo Man" now watching Morgan directly, how long can she keep her family safe while still working for the LAPD? Would you like me to help you draft a "Suspect Board" identifying who might be behind Roman's disappearance, based on these new clues? Leave a comment.

You can catch High Potential Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.
