The penultimate episode of Season 2 delivered tension, a rescue, and a shocking ending. Here's a recap and review of Landman's "Plans, Tears, and Sirens."
The launch of the offshore rig should have been a moment of triumph for M-Tex, but it instead exposed the irreparable rift between Cami and Tommy. Watching the rig pass by, Cami admits she finally feels the "rush" that once drove Monty. Tommy, ever the realist, warns her that the rush is a lie that leads to ruin.
In a cold, calculated move that signals her full transition into a "villain arc," Cami decides Tommy is too risk-averse for her vision. Her words—"You’re fired"—effectively strip the company of its moral compass just as they embark on their most dangerous gamble yet.
Ainsley heads off to TCU cheerleading camp, only to be met with a roommate from hell: Paigyn, a militant activist who represents everything Ainsley doesn't understand. Rather than growing from the experience, Ainsley retreats to the comfort of her privilege. Angela swoops in to "save" the day, renting out a luxury suite and the entire pool for the squad. It’s a beautifully performed sequence that highlights a recurring theme: Ainsley isn't being prepared for the real world; she's being insulated from it.
It was a landmark episode for Cooper. Not only did he assert himself as a leader by choosing a modest but reliable new drilling site, but he finally earned the respect of his skeptical crew. However, his professional high was met with a harrowing personal low. Arriving at Ariana’s workplace, Cooper finds her being brutally assaulted by a former customer. Cooper delivers a savage beatdown to the attacker, but the intervention is caught on camera—leaving us to wonder if his protective instincts will land him in legal jeopardy.
"Plans, Tears, and Sirens" was a fantastic buildup to the finale. The episode effectively balanced the "quirky" side of the Norris family with the brutal realities of the oil patch. Cami firing Tommy is a game-changer. Without Tommy’s leverage and experience, M-Tex feels like a ship heading straight for a reef. The Cooper-Ariana storyline took a dark, unexpected turn. The "heroic" beatdown was cathartic, but the looming legal consequences add a great layer of dread. T.L. and Penny's relationship continues to be the most wholesome part of the show, providing a much-needed breath of fresh air. But while the Angela and Ainsley dynamic is well-acted, Ainsley’s inability to handle even minor conflict without her mother’s intervention is becoming a bit repetitive. We’re still waiting for that moment when she finally stands on her own two feet.
What did you think of this week's episode? With Tommy officially out at M-Tex and Cooper facing a potential police investigation, the Norris family is more vulnerable than ever. Do you think Tommy will find a way back into the company, or is he better off letting Cami's ship sink on its own? Leave a comment.
