A Perfect St. Patrick’s Day Binge – Finally Watching Derry Girls

Looking for something to watch this St. Patrick’s Day? I finally hit play this month on Derry Girls and let’s just say I’ve never been happier to be late to the party.

If there’s ever a perfect time to finally catch up on Derry Girls, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. I’ll be the first to admit I was very late to the party, but after diving into the streets of 1990s Northern Ireland, I completely understand why this show has become a global favorite and why it feels like required viewing this time of year.

Set during the tail end of "The Troubles," the series follows Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle, and the "honorary Derry Girl," James. They are navigating Catholic school, eccentric family dynamics, and the relentless awkwardness of growing up. What makes the show so special is its tonal tightrope act: history is always present, but it never overshadows the messy, hilarious reality of being a

In the first season, this series pulled me in instantly. It’s quick, chaotic, and packed with nonstop laughs, but there’s a real warmth underneath the sarcasm.

That balance only improves in Seasons 2 and 3. The comedy gets bigger, think unhinged concert trips and disastrous "peace-building" initiatives—and the situations get more ridiculous, yet the emotional beats start to hit harder.

In the final season, it set around the historic Good Friday Agreement, the series finale is the perfect send-off. It is funny, emotional, and quietly hopeful—a reminder that even in the middle of history, life keeps moving. Sometimes, "history" just means trying to pass your exams or making it to a party on time.

The performances are fantastic across the board, but the real star is creator Lisa McGee’s writing. She effortlessly blends humor and heart in a way that feels both incredibly specific to Derry and completely universal to anyone who has ever survived being seventeen.

Late or not, I’m officially on board. This isn't just a great sitcom; it’s one of the most perfect St. Patrick’s Day watches in existence.

Overall, I give the series a 10/10.

Have you already joined the "Gang" at our Lady Immaculate College, or was I the last one to finally discover the genius of Sister Michael’s eye-rolls? Leave a comment.

You can catch Derry Girls on Netflix.
