CIA (S1, EP. 9) "Blood Money"

This week’s CIA revealed the dark link between corporate interests and global terror, showing 'blood money' leaves a trail if you look. It covered a family business turned terror-funder and a mole hunt, highlighting broken trusts and fragile alliances. Here's my recap and review.

The mission ignites when a high-value source, Zara (Karen David), provides a roadmap to a dangerous terrorist leader. This intelligence leads CIA Case Officer Colin Glass and FBI Agent Bill Goodman to the Levni family, a Turkish dynasty whose legitimate international operations are secretly serving as the financial backbone for a Syrian terrorist regime. To dismantle the network, the fusion cell must play a psychological game of "divide and conquer." The team eventually identifies Ali as the weak link in the family dynamic, successfully turning him into an informant to expose the domestic side of the Levnis' dirty dealings.

However, the real war was happening inside the Agency's own walls. Throughout the investigation, Bill and guest investigator Jubal Valentine find their crosshairs landing squarely on Colin. Suspicion reaches a fever pitch when Bill uncovers a digital paper trail connecting Colin to Pyramid Security, a shadowy "spies for hire" intelligence firm. The conflict is complicated by the fact that Colin’s girlfriend, Sarah, is a high-level employee at the firm. In a tense, mid-mission confrontation, Bill finally levels the accusation of treason against his partner. In a startling subversion, Colin doesn't just deny the claim; he reveals he has been running his own off-book investigation into Sarah. Recognizing that they are both chasing the same ghost, the two rivals agree to a temporary truce, teaming up to unmask the true traitor before the "Pyramid" collapses on them both.

"Blood Money" truly stands out as the most compelling episode this season! It expertly blends a captivating "case of the week" with significant progress on the main mystery. With Colin and Bill united in their focus on Sarah and Pyramid Security, their search for the traitor has intensified from mere suspicion to outright confrontation. This episode is a sharp, cynical, and deeply engaging hour that shines especially because of the fantastic "buddy cop" dynamic between Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss. By finally addressing the big 'elephant in the room', the mole investigation, the show has transformed from a simple procedural into a much more fascinating character study.

Linking the mole hunt to Pyramid Security is a smart choice as it introduces a contemporary "corporate espionage' element that makes the story feel current and elevates the excitement beyond just political betrayal. Karen David’s Zara also brought a captivating spark to the episode, adding depth and energy. The show really shines in its illustration of how even "legitimate" businesses can be used as tools for darker purposes, transforming what could be a simple terror plot into a nuanced financial thriller.

Overall, I give this episode an 8.5/10.

What did you think of this week's episode? With Colin and Bill now working together to investigate Sarah, do you think they’ve finally identified the source of the leak, or is the real mole at Pyramid Security just using Sarah as the perfect distraction to keep the Agency's eyes off the true traitor in the fusion cell? Leave a comment.

You can catch CIA Mondays at 10/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
