Ghosts (S5, Ep. 15) "Michael Jackson Goes to HR"

This week, the spotlight was on the 90s 'finance bro' and his exhausted human proxy. Trevor’s past indiscretions clash with HR realities, forcing Jay into a corporate nightmare that even a fake identity can't fix. Here's my recap of 'Michael Jackson Goes to HR.'

The central crisis begins when Trevor attempts a grand gesture by sending a gift to a former co-worker—a move that goes spectacularly wrong when HR flags it as a violation. Because Trevor is, well, dead, the company demands an immediate meeting with his "representative," the mysterious Michael Jackson (the alias Trevor used for his illicit financial dealings).

Desperate to keep Trevor’s remaining funds afloat, Jay reluctantly steps up to the plate. Donning the persona of the high-flying executive, Jay finds himself in over his head as he navigates a barrage of corporate questioning. While the performance is initially smooth—featuring Jay’s hilarious commitment to the bit—the charade eventually collapses under HR's scrutiny. Once they realize "Michael Jackson" is a fabrication, they terminate Trevor’s accounts for good. Despite the financial blow and the discovery that Trevor hasn't paid taxes for over two years (which leads to a literal "sitting" punishment from a frustrated Jay), Sam and Jay find a silver lining. Taking a cue from the ghosts' centuries of perspective, the couple chooses to appreciate the struggle of building their business before the eventual payoff.

In the B-plot, Pete returns from a trip to visit Alberta’s relatives, but he accidentally stirs the pot by admitting he also stopped by to check in on his ex-wife. The revelation sparks a rare moment of jealousy and friction between the two. The drama escalates when they involve the other spirits, leading to a tense conversation in which Pete tries to play it cool about Alberta’s history with one of the British ghosts from the shed. After some "head games" and meddling from their fellow ghosts, the air is finally cleared. Pete offers a sincere apology for the oversight, and the two find a new level of honesty in their complicated, spectral partnership.

"Michael Jackson Goes to HR" is a classic Ghosts episode that highlights Jay’s willingness to be the ultimate team player, even for people he can’t see. The "Michael Jackson" cover was comedic gold for Utkarsh Ambudkar, whose physical comedy and frantic attempt to sound like a Wall Street shark brought big laughs. It delivered what the title promised: a hilarious, high-stakes identity crisis. It also brought Sam and Jay closer in their entrepreneurial adventure and reminded us that while Trevor was a "monster" of the 90s, he’s lucky to have the most patient roommates.

Watching Jay and Sam handle Trevor’s tax-evading legacy brought a comforting yet slightly darker touch to the B&B’s financial struggles, making the final ghost-inspired wisdom feel truly earned. The Alberta/Pete storyline was more traditional, but it gave Pete some meaningful growth. Seeing him honestly navigate the

Overall, I give this episode an 8/10.

What did you think of this week's episode? With Trevor’s financial nest egg officially fried and Jay now a persona non grata in the corporate world, do you think the Woodstone B&B is finally ready for a 'righteous' season of profit, or is the ghosts' lack of tax history going to keep Sam and Jay in the red?
