From a fierce campaign at Madison Square Garden to a tender 30th birthday, it balanced satire with the intimate bond between two women. Here's my recap and review.
Deborah's drive to sell out Madison Square Garden, a long-held goal, faces opposition from MSG booker Amanda Weinberg, who dismisses her as outdated. Not willing to give up, Deborah rallies her followers, the "Little Debbies," to harass Amanda online and offline. This tactic succeeds, but Amanda reluctantly offers Deborah a highly problematic date: September 11th. Deborah sees the challenge as a chance rather than a disaster.
To keep her "resurrection" momentum, Deborah, Ava, and Damien attend the "Day of 100 Stars" convention in Las Vegas. Instead of admiration, Deborah faces fans airing grievances, treating her like a nostalgia customer service rep. The venue is a graveyard of C-list celebrities, with cameos from Soleil Moon Frye, Billy Baldwin, and Renee O’Connor, who becomes a target for Jimmy’s failed podcast attempt. The absurdity underscores the hour's theme: fame's transactional nature and the emptiness of being loved by all but known by none.
The episode peaks at the Vegas estate, where Deborah throws a surprise 30th birthday party for Ava. She hires Jesse McCartney to serenade a shell-shocked Ava, fulfilling a teenage fantasy Ava mentioned. Initially suspecting the gesture as guilt, the night becomes a moment of vulnerability. They end up in the kitchen, making bread. Deborah admits she’s used her fans as a substitute for real connection, prompting Ava to declare herself her "number one fan." This sets the stage for the upcoming high-stakes MSG performance.
"Number One Fan" highlights Hacks at its cleverest and most heartfelt, critiquing fans' tendency to feel they "own" celebrities while delivering touching moments. Filled with humor like the memorable "Little Debbies" mail-bombing Amanda, it also emphasizes character growth, making the last season meaningful. Hacks approaches its finale with Deborah finally opening her heart to Ava after realizing her fans are a "substitute" for true love. Together, they head toward the Garden, ready to prove themselves, setting the stage for an epic final chapter.
Ubach is a force of nature, and her lively, bold energy wonderfully complemented Deborah’s arrogance. The 9/11 booking reveal was a surprisingly heartfelt and humorous payoff that only this show could deliver with such style. The kitchen scene with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder was incredibly well performed and remains the best chemistry onscreen. Watching them evolve from employer and employee to a relationship that feels more like family is a delightful, nuanced journey that truly resonates. The depiction of the "Day of 100 Stars" was perfectly spot-on, capturing the unique, slightly sad yet playful atmosphere of celebrity autograph circuits.
Overall, I give this episode a 9/10.
